Baseball: Penguins Come Back to Beat Akron 13-9
Niles, Ohio -- The Youngstown State
baseball team broke open a tie game
with four runs in the bottom of the
eighth and former Zip Mike Abdalla
pitched two scoreless innings as the
Penguins beat Akron 13-9 at Cafaro
Field on Thursday afternoon.
Youngstown State (16-22-1) faced deficits of 5-3 and 8-5, but
each time rallied to the game when
in the eighth, it broke the game
open. Consecutive doubles by Kellen
Dixon and Joe Marzano started the
rally as the Penguins have won two
of their last three contests. Akron,
which beat Ohio State on Wednesday,
dropped to 8-27 on the season.
Abdalla (2-2) entered a tie game in the top of the eighth and
allowed one hit, a walk and had a
strikeout against his former club.
Jonathan Smart started for YSU and
pitched three innings allowing one
run on two hits. Paul Yates allowed
six runs -- five earned -- in one
inning and Frank Santore allowed two
runs on six hits in three innings of
work. Akron's Bryan Celik suffered
the loss.
Offensively for the Penguins, Dixon had a triple and a
double, Joe Marzano and Matt Lucki
each drove in three runs, while
Marzano had three hits and freshman
Kendall Schlabach launched the first
homer of his YSU career. Jim Gemler
went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three
runs scored to lead the Akron
offense.
With the game tied at nine in the eighth, Dixon led off with
a double to right and scored on a
first-pitch double by Marzano. After
Todd Santore's bunt advanced Marzano
to third, Jim Lipinski and Steve
Mefferd walked to load the bases.
For Akron, Dan Swallie relieved
Celik and allowed an RBI single to
Clint Ford. Matt Lucki followed with
another RBI single before the first
out of the inning was recorded. A
Schlabach grounder that was
mishandled by shortstop Clarke White
allowed Mefferd to score the final
run of the inning.
The Penguins return to Mid-Continent Conference action with a
four-game series at Cafaro Field
against Chicago State. YSU and the
Cougars play twice on Saturday
beginning at noon and twice on
Sunday, also a noon start time.
