Baseball: Bendle Leads YSU Past Dukes, 8-4
Niles, Ohio -- YSU junior right-hander Rusty Bendle pitched 7.2 innings to help lead the Penguins to an 8-4 win over Duquesne on Tuesday night at Cafaro Field. Bendle struck out seven and scattered eight hits in making the longest outing of his career.
Youngstown State (15-21-1) scored seven runs in the first two innings and led 8-0 before the Dukes (14-22) scored four runs in the top of the eighth before Mike Abdalla relieved Bendle and ended the threat. Todd Santore had three hits and drove in three runs and Adam Cox homered, doubled and had three RBI.
In the first inning, Kendall Schlabach walked and Kellen Dixon singled. Joe Marzano advanced the runners with a sacrfice bunt. Santore singled to score Schlabach and Dixon and give YSU a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Clint Ford singled and catcher Adam Cox followed with a homer down the left-field line. After Schlabach hit into a double play, Dixon walked and scored on a long single by Joe Marzano. Santore singled to bring in Marzano and advanced to second on the throw. Jim Lipinski followed with a single that was misplayed in right field to score Santore. Chris Lewis (1-3) was chased after allowing seven runs on seven hits in two innings.
The Penguins return to action on Wednesday when they play at Toledo.
