Baseball: Penguins Lose 8-3 at Duquesne
Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The Youngstown
State baseball team lost to Duquesne
8-3 on Wednesday afternoon at
Duquesne Field in Pittsburgh. The
Penguins had nine hits in the
contest, but the Dukes had 13 hits
off five YSU pitchers to earn the
win.
Kendall Schlabach went 3-for-4 and Kellen Dixon had a hit to
extend his career-best hitting
streak to 16 games. Steve Mefferd
added two hits for YSU which falls
to 19-25-1 on the season. The Dukes
improve to 17-25 on the season.
With the game tied 2-2 in the third, Duquesne scored four
runs off of Jonathan Smart (5-5) who
allowed four runs -- all earned --
in 1.1 innings of work. Matt Brumit
started for the Penguins and allowed
two runs on four hits in two
innings. YSU's Rusty Bendle kept the
Penguins in the game allowing no
runs in 2.2 innings allowing four
hits while striking out four.
YSU pulled within 5-3 scoring a run in the fourth, but
Duquesne scored two runs in the
seventh off Brad Hennessey.
Hennessey struck out the side and
the two runs were unearned. Mike
Abdalla pitched a scoreless eighth
for the Penguins.
With his three strikeouts, Hennessey has 91 on the season
which sets a school single-season
record for strikeouts breaking a
24-year-old mark. The previous mark
was 89 set by Bill Sattler in 1977.
For Duquesne, Andy Mason pitched eight innings scattering
nine hits while allowing three runs.
Jim Onder had three hits for the
Dukes while Jonathan Kelly had two
hits, including his first homer of
the year. YSU beat Duquesne 8-4
earlier this season.
The Penguins return to Mid-Continent Conference action on
Saturday when they play a
doubleheader at Oakland. |
