Baseball: Penguins Split Doubleheader at IUPUI
Indianapolis, Ind. -- The
Youngstown State baseball team split
a doubleheader at IUPUI on Saturday
winning the first game 10-3 behind a
nine-inning complete game by Brad
Hennessey, but dropped the second
contest 17-10 at Indy Sports Park.
In game one, Hennessey struck out 12 batters en route to his
third complete game of the year. He
scattered eight hits and allowed
single runs in the seventh, eighth
and ninth innings as the Penguins
pounded Jaguar pitching for 14 hits.
In the second game, YSU (14-19-1
overall and 5-8 in the conference)
led 5-0 after one-and-a-half innings
and was in front 8-5 before IUPUI
(11-26, 5-9) scored eight runs in
the fourth to earn the split.
Besides Hennessey's effort in game one, Kellen Dixon scored
two runs and had two RBI, Steve
Mefferd had three hits and Todd
Santore and Ty Furino each had two
hits. Santore, Jim Lipinski and Adam
Cox each drove in two runs as Cox
homered. YSU scored two runs in the
second, four in the fifth, three in
the seventh and one in the eighth.
Hennessey improves to 3-3 on the
year.
In the night cap, Kendall Schlabach had three hits and scored
four runs while Dixon went 4-for-4
with two RBI. Lipinski drove in
three runs but it wasn't enough.
Jonathan Smart suffered the loss
pitching just 3.1 innings allowing
11 runs -- all earned -- on nine
hits and four walks. He struck out
three. Frank Santore allowed five
earned runs in three innings and
Rusty Bendle allowed one run and
three hits in 1.2 innings of work.
For IUPUI in game two, Mike Kalasek homered and had six RBI.
The Penguins and Jaguars conclude the series on Sunday with
two seven-inning games. First pitch
is scheduled for 1 p.m. |
