Baseball: Penguins Lose Final Two Games at IUPUI
Indianapolis -- The IUPUI baseball
team swept both games of a
doubleheader from Youngstown State
10-2 and 9-5 at Indy Sports Park on
Sunday afternoon. With the wins, the
Jaguars move into fourth place in
the Mid-Continent Conference
standings overtaking the Penguins.
YSU (14-21-1 overall and 5-10) managed just three hits off
Neal Huysman in the first game of
the doubleheader. Kyle Sobecki
started and allowed one hit in 2.2
innings of work, but Paul Yates and
Rusty Bendle alled 10 runs in the
fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Huysman struck out seven to improve
to 2-6 on the season. In game two,
YSU led 3-0 before IUPUI scored nine
unanswered runs. YSU had 11 hits
while the Jaguars (13-26 and 7-9)
had 13.
In game one, IUPUI broke open a scoreless tie with five runs
in the bottom of the fourth. The
Jaguars added three runs in the
fifth and two in the sixth. Both
Penguin runs came in the sixth.
IUPUI's Dusty Bowling hit two home
runs and drove in four runs. Mike
Kalsek hit a solo homer. Joe Marzano
and Matt Lucki had RBIs while Kellen
Dixon, Marzano and Steve Mefferd
collected YSU's three hits.
In game two, the Jaguars took the lead for good scoring two
runs in the bottom of the fourth
overcoming a 3-2 deficit. Kalsek
belted two home runs for IUPUI and
had four RBI. Dixon hit a solo home
run for YSU as Mefferd, Lucki,
Marzano and Clint Ford had two hits
apiece. Matt Brumit allowed six runs
in five innings and Mike Abdalla
allowed three unearned runs in one
inning. Ryan Leininger earned the
win to improve to 2-3 on the year.
The Penguins, who have lost eight of their last nine games
return home to play host to Duquesne
at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Cafaro
