Baseball: Penguins Maul Kent State 12-4
Niles, Ohio -- Freshman right-hander Frank Santore
came through with the longest outing
of his young career and the
Penguins' bats came alive with 17
hits as the Youngstown State
baseball team beat Kent State 12-4
at Cafaro Field on Tuesday night.
Santore pitched 6.2 innings allowing three runs -- all
unearned -- while striking out four
to earn the first win of his career.
Freshman Paul Yates came on with YSU
leading 6-3 in top of the seventh.
With two outs and two on, Yates
faced National Hitter of the Week
John VanBenschoten, but retired the
nation's hottest hitter on a fly out
to right to end the threat. In the
bottom of the eighth, YSU scored six
runs, including a two-run homer by
Jim Lipinski to seal the win.
All 10 position players who played in the contest had at
least one hit for the Penguins.
Lipinski and catcher Clint Ford had
three hits each while Kendall
Schlabach, Kellen Dixon and Adam Cox
had two hits apiece. Lipinski and
Joe Marzano drove in three runs and
Dixon and Cox had two RBI.
Schlabach, Lipinski, Ford and Cox
also scored twice.
YSU scored a run in the second, third and fifth before
striking for three runs in the
sixth. Cox hit a two-run single to
score Steve Mefferd and Ford and
Schlabach had an RBI single that
scored Cox.
Kent State scored three runs in the sixth and with runners at
second and third Yates took over for
Santore. After getting two quick
strikes on VanBenschoten, Yates got
a fly out to right to end the
inning.
In the eighth, the Penguins tacked on six runs, including a
three-run homer by Lipinski.
YSU plays at Duquense on Wednesday with the first pitch
scheduled for 4 p.m. |
