Baseball: Penguins Split Key Doubleheader at
Oakland
Rochester, Mich. -- The Youngstown State split a
doubleheader at Oakland on Saturday
winning game one 12-3 before
dropping the second game 8-5 at the
OU Baseball Field.
In game one, the Penguins (20-26-1 overall and 8-13 in the
Mid-Con) banged out 12 hits as Brad
Hennessey struck out 10 in seven
innings to earn the 12-3 win. In the
second game, Oakland (9-27 and 6-14)
got a complete game performance from
Dominic Carmosino as the Penguins
outhit the Golden Grizzlies 11-8.
After a scoreless first four innings in game one, the
Penguins took the lead in the fifth
on a James Swearengen single. After
the Golden Grizzlies tied the game
in the bottom of the inning, YSU
scored twice on a two-run double by
Clint Ford in the sixth to take a
3-1 lead. The Penguins tacked on two
runs in the seventh before erupting
for seven runs in the eighth to
break the game open. Hennessey
earned the win striking out 10 in
seven innings while scattering four
hits. He allowed one run while
walking four. Paul Yates pitched the
final two innings allowing two runs
on two hits.
In game two, YSU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI
groundout by Todd Santore, but the
Golden Grizzlies answered with three
runs in the fifth. YSU tied the game
scoring twice in the sixth before
Oakland scored three runs in the
bottom of the seventh. YSU cut the
deficit to 6-5 in the eighth on a
two-out two-run single by Ford
before ending the inning leaving
runners at second and third. OU
scored twice in the eighth for some
insurance to earn the spilt.
Matt Brumit took the loss for YSU in game two falling to 1-6
on the year. In 7.2 innings he
allowed eight runs -- seven earned
-- on eight hits and had eight
strikeouts.
The Penguins and Golden Grizzlies conclude the series with a
doubleheader on Sunday beginning at
noon. |
