Baseball: YSU Climbs to Fourth With Two Wins
Rochester, Mich. -- The Youngstown State baseball team
had a good day on Sunday beating
Oakland 10-6 and 29-2 in both games
of a doubleheader at OU Baseball
Field. While the Penguins won twice,
IUPUI dropped two games allowing
Youngstown State to move into fourth
place in the Mid-Con Conference
race.
The Penguins (22-26-1 and 10-13) own a game-and-a-half lead
over the Jaguars with the team's
concluding league regular-season
play next weekend. YSU plays host to
second-place Southern Utah while
IUPUI plays at Chicago State. The
top four teams in the Mid-Con
qualify for the conference
tournament set for May 17-19 at
Tulsa, Okla.
On Sunday, the Penguins began the day with 10-6 game-one win
and in the night cap set a school
record for runs scored with 29. The
previous school record was 25 set in
1965 against Hiram.
In game one, Frank Santore pitched three scoreless innings of
relief as the Penguins rallied from
6-4 deficit scoring six runs in the
final three innings. Santore allowed
only three hits and struck out two
to earn the win.
Youngstown State was on fire at the plate in game two. Jim
Lipinski, who homered in the first
game, hit three home runs and had
eight RBI to break school records in
both categories. Adam Cox finished
the game with seven RBI and Joe
Marzano had six RBI. Both Cox and
Marzano homered while Steve Mefferd
hit his first home run of the year.
Marzano had four hits to lead YSU in
game two as he and Lipinski each
scored five runs.
The Penguins scored the first 29 runs of the game, including
10 in the fifth and eight in the
sixth, pounding out 19 hits.
Jonathan Smart earned the win
allowing just two hits in five
innings.
Oral Roberts beat IUPUI 9-4 and 21-0 on Sunday to help YSU
move into fourth place. The Golden
Eagles won the regular-season league
crown with the victories.
The Penguins won three of four games against the Golden
Grizzlies. YSU is off until
Saturday, May 12, when it plays host
to Southern Utah at Cafaro Field. |
