Baseball: Oral Roberts Takes Two From YSU; 9-5, 8-1
Niles, Ohio -- The Oral Roberts baseball team used
five homers and crafty pitching
performances from Mike Rodgers and
David Humen to sweep a doubleheader
from Youngstown State, 9-5 and 8-1
on Saturday afternoon at Cafaro
Field.
In game one, YSU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the
first inning but Rodgers kept the
Penguins in check allowing just one
run in the next six innings as Oral
Roberts scored eight unanswered runs
thanks to homers by Chad Stewart,
Stockton Davis and Josh Shackelford.
In game two, Humen scattered six
hits and allowed one run in 7.1
innings while Stewart and Jimmy
Lintt homered for the Golden Eagles.
No. 29 Oral Roberts improves to 26-6 and remains a perfect
10-0 in the Mid-Continent
Conference. The Golden Eagles have
won 12 straight games and seven
consecutive contests over the
Penguins. YSU falls to 13-16-1 and
4-6 on the year. The teams conclude
the series with an Easter Sunday
doubleheader at Cafaro Field
beginning at noon.
Youngstown State came out in first game and built a 2-0 lead
on an RBI-double by Todd Santore and
a RBI single by Jim Lipinski. But
ORU tied the game in the second and
took the lead for good with a
two-run third. YSU trailed 8-2
before scoring once in the seventh.
ORU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth and YSU
mounted a threat in the bottom of
the inning scoring twice with one
out when Matt Lucki singled off
Dallas Martin. With no outs and two
runners on, Adam Cox struck out,
Kendall Schlabach hit into a
fielder's choice and Kellen Dixon
lined out to center to end the
threat.
In game two, YSU's offense never got going in being held to
just one run for the second time in
the last three outings. ORU led 4-0
after two innings and extended the
lead to 6-0 on a two-run homer by
Stewart in the sixth. The Penguins
scored their lone run in the sixth
when Ty Furino scored on a Dixon
ground out. In the seventh Lintt hit
a two-run homer off Matt Brumit
(1-4) to help give the Golden Eagles
an 8-1 win. |
