Baseball: ORU Spoils Hennessey's Effort Winning 4-2
Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State's Brad Hennessey
struck out a career-high 13 en route
to tossing a complete game, but Oral
Roberts held on for a 4-2 victory to
spoil his outing on a rainy Sunday
afternoon and sweep the three-game
series. Game two of Sunday's
scheduled doubleheader was canceled
because of rain.
YSU scored twice in the first to take a 2-1 lead and opened
the bottom of the seventh with
back-to-back singles trailing 4-2,
but could not get any runs home to
tie the game. The Penguins have lost
four straight games and are 13-17-1
overall and 4-7 in the Mid-Continent
Conference. ORU has won 13 straight
games and eight straight against the
Penguins to improve to 28-6 and
11-0.
Hennessey (2-3) took the loss allowing
eight hits in throwing a complete
game. He walked three and all four
runs were earned.
ORU scored a run in the first inning when David Castillo's
bloop single with two outs landed
just inside the left-field line to
score Danny Boyle.
YSU jumped on ORU's Stockton Davis (4-1) early as the the
Penguins' first four runners reached
base. Steve Mefferd, who was hit by
a pitch, scored on a single by Joe
Marzano and Kellen Dixon scored on a
single by Todd Santore. But Davis
worked out of the jam to keep the
Golden Eagles just one run down.
In the third, ORU took advantage of some Hennessey control
problems taking advantage of two
walks and a hit batter. With the
bases loaded, Billy Joe Richardson
walked to force in Steve Holm with
the tying run.
In the fourth, Boyle's two-RBI single helped break the game
open. Matt Colin doubled to lead off
the inning and Doug Bernier was hit
by Hennessey. After a sacrifice bunt
by Chad Stewart, Boyle slapped a
single up the middle through a drawn
in YSU infield to score two runs.
YSU threatened in the seventh as a Kendall Schlabach singled
up the middle to open the inning and
knock Davis out of the game. Adam
Cox greeted Dallas Martin with a
pinch hit single. With two on, Steve
Mefferd struck out after Ty Furino
pinch ran for Cox. Dixon reached on
a fielder's choice as Furino was
forced out at second and Schlabach
advanced to third. With two on and
two out, Martin's 3-2 pitch froze
Marzano who struck out looking to
end the game.
The Penguins are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday
when they play at No. 26 Ohio State.
First pitch at Bill Davis Stadium is
scheduled for 6:30 p.m. |
