Baseball: Penguins Can't Hold On in 10-9 Defeat
Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The Youngstown State baseball team
could not hold on to a seven-run
lead losing at Pittsburgh 10-9 on a
beautiful Thursday afternoon at
Tress Field.
The Penguins, 9-12-1, scored eight runs in the first four
innings building an 8-1 lead, but
the Panthers scored three runs in
the fifth, and after YSU went in
front 9-4, Pittsburgh (15-12) scored
five times in the seventh to tie the
game. In the bottom of the ninth,
Pitt's Tony Railing beat out an
infield single to score Joe Burger
to give the Panthers the
come-from-behind win.
For most of the afternoon things looked good for YSU. The
Penguins scored in each of the first
four innings building an 8-1
advantage.
In the first, Kendall Schlabach, who had three hits, tripled
and scored on a groundout by Kellen
Dixon. In the second, Jim Lipinski
doubled and scored on a Panthers
error. In the third, Todd Santore,
Clint Ford and Steve Mefferd each
had RBI singles and in the fourth
inning, Ford added a three-run
triple.
In the fifth, the Panthers scored three runs, including two
on a home run by Brad Rea. In the
seventh inning, Pittsburgh tied the
game with five runs with the big
blow, a three-run homer by Corey
Joyce.
Then with two outs in the ninth, Burger singled, stole second
and moved to third on a wild pitch.
After Dan Troppman walked, Railing
hit a ball in the hole at short and
beat the throw with a feet first
slide.
The Penguins look to snap a five-game losing streak when they
travel to Mid-Continent Conference
foe Western Illinois. The four-game
series against the Leathernecks
starts Saturday. |
