Baseball: Penguins Drop 8-4 Contest at Toledo
Toledo, Ohio -- The Youngstown State baseball team
jumped out to a 3-1 lead on Toledo,
but the Rockets scored seven of the
game's final eight runs to defeat
the Penguins 8-4 on Wednesday
afternoon at Scott Park.
The Penguins (15-22-1) led 3-1 entering the bottom of the
fifth before scoring three runs off
YSU ace Brad Hennessey. YSU tied the
game in the sixth, but the Rockets
(20-22) scored twice in the bottom
of the inning. Hennessey suffered
the loss allowing five runs in just
two innings. Todd Santore had two
hits as YSU outhit the Rockets 9-8
in the contest.
Youngstown State scored in the first and third innings to
take a 2-0 lead before the Rockets
cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of
the third. YSU added a run in the
fourth, before Toledo scored three
runs in the bottom of the fifth to
take the lead. After the Penguins
answered with a run in the sixth to
tie the game, Toledo scored two runs
in the sixth and twice in the
seventh to pull out the win.
Nick Rowland (2-2) earned the victory with 2.2 innings of
scoreless relief. The Penguins did
not have a hit in the final four
innings against three UT relievers.
YSU used five pitchers in the contest while the Rockets used
seven. Matt Brumit started and
pitched hitless two innings, Paul
Yates allowed one run in two
innings, Hennessey gave up seven
hits and five runs in two innings,
James Swearengan made his first
appearance on the mound this season
and allowed two runs in an inning
and Frank Santore pitched a perfect
eighth, striking out two.
YSU tries to regroup today at 3 p.m. when it plays host to
Akron at Cafaro Field. |
