Baseball: Penguins Fall to Oral Roberts 10-3

Tulsa, Okla. -- The Youngstown State baseball team could not overcome a slow start in a 10-3 loss to Oral Roberts at J.L. Johnson Stadium in the first round of the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament on Thursday night.
The Penguins (24-29-1) gave up all 10 Golden Eagle runs in the first three innings and could not overcome the rough start. YSU committed four errors in the first three frames and starting pitcher Rusty Bendle walked six and surrendered five hits in two-plus innings of work. Bendle took the loss allowing nine runs, eight of which were earned.
YSU plays Valparaiso at 1 p.m. on Friday in the first elimination game of the tournament. The Crusaders suffered a 5-4 ninth-inning setback to Southern Utah in the first game of the day. The Penguins dropped three of four contests to Valpo earlier this year.
On Thursday, ORU jumped out quickly scoring four runs in the first, one in the second and five runs -- on just one hit in the third. YSU scored a run in the second and added two in the fifth, while holding the Golden Eagles scoreless in the final five innings.
ORU ace Michael Rogers earned the win pitching seven innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out seven. Oral Roberts reliever David Humen struck out four of the six batters he faced.
For YSU, Frank Santore pitched four innings allowing just two hits and one run to keep the Penguins in the game. Paul Yates pitched a scoreless seventh and shortstop James Swearengen pitched a solid eighth in helping to keep ORU in check.
Catcher Todd Santore had two hits and scored three runs, Jim Lipinski had two hits and Clint Ford had two hits and two RBI. The Penguins 8-9-1-2-3 hitters combined to go 1-for-19 in the game.
ORU's Steve Holm and Wilton Reynolds had two RBI apiece. Brian Hickman, Erick Donaldson and Danny Boyle scored twice as the Golden Eagles improve to 46-11 and have won 11 consecutive games entering Friday's contest against Southern Utah in the winner's bracket.
