Tulsa, Okla. – Despite a 4-for-5 performance freshman Kendall Schlabach and 11 strikeouts from YSU starting pitcher Brad Hennessey, the Youngstown State baseball team’s season ended after dropping a 7-5 decision to Valparaiso in the elimination game at the Mid-Continent Conference Baseball Tournament.
The Penguins finished the season with an overall record of 24-30-1. Valparaiso lost later on Friday to Southern Utah to end the season with a 28-29 mark. Schlabach was named to the All-Tournament team for his effort as Oral Roberts won the tournament beating Southern Utah 12-7.
The Penguins led, 5-4, in the bottom of the seventh inning but allowed three runs on four hits as the Crusaders recaptured the lead, 7-5.  Valparaiso’s Eric Snyder led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on Chris Moore’s sacrifice bunt. Mickey Scala’s double to left-center field scored Snyder and tied the score, 5-5.  After Mark Petersen’s infield single, Brad Tokarz slapped a pinch-hit two-run double to left field to give the Crusaders the lead for good.
The Penguins attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth but left the bases loaded.
Youngstown State started the scoring after Todd Santore’s RBI single plated Joe Marzano.  The Crusaders took the lead after scoring one run in the bottom of the second and another in the third. The Penguins tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the fifth on Kellen Dixon’s run-scoring single.
Valparaiso retook the lead, 4-2, with two more runs in the bottom-half of the inning.  Snyder double to right field and scored on Moore’s triple then scored on a ground out to second base.
The Penguins rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead, 5-4. Clint Ford led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on single by Adam Cox. Ty Furino drove in Ford with a single to right field and advanced to second on an error while Cox moved to third. Schlabach singled home Cox while Furino scored on Dixon’s fielder’s choice.
Dixon, Santore and Furino each slapped two hits for the Penguins while Dixon drove in two runs.
