Baseball: Penguins
Eliminated By Valpo, 7-5
Tulsa, Okla. –
Despite a 4-for-5 performance
freshman Kendall Schlabach and 11
strikeouts from YSU starting pitcher
Brad Hennessey, the Youngstown State
baseball team’s season ended after
dropping a 7-5 decision to
Valparaiso in the elimination game
at the Mid-Continent Conference
Baseball Tournament.
The Penguins finished the season with an overall record
of 24-30-1. Valparaiso lost later on
Friday to Southern Utah to end the
season with a 28-29 mark. Schlabach
was named to the All-Tournament team
for his effort as Oral Roberts won
the tournament beating Southern Utah
12-7.
The Penguins led, 5-4, in the bottom of the seventh
inning but allowed three runs on
four hits as the Crusaders
recaptured the lead, 7-5.
Valparaiso’s Eric Snyder led off the
inning with a bunt single and
advanced to second on Chris Moore’s
sacrifice bunt. Mickey Scala’s
double to left-center field scored
Snyder and tied the score, 5-5.
After Mark Petersen’s infield
single, Brad Tokarz slapped a
pinch-hit two-run double to left
field to give the Crusaders the lead
for good.
The Penguins attempted a comeback in the top of
the ninth but left the bases loaded.
Youngstown State started the scoring after Todd
Santore’s RBI single plated Joe
Marzano.
The Crusaders took the lead after scoring one run in the bottom of the
second and another in the third. The
Penguins tied the game, 2-2, in the
top of the fifth on Kellen Dixon’s
run-scoring single.
Valparaiso retook the lead, 4-2, with two more runs in
the bottom-half of the inning. Snyder double to right field and scored on Moore’s triple
then scored on a ground out to
second base.
The Penguins rallied for three runs in the top of the
seventh to regain the lead, 5-4.
Clint Ford led off the inning with a
single and advanced to third on
single by Adam Cox. Ty Furino drove
in Ford with a single to right field
and advanced to second on an error
while Cox moved to third. Schlabach
singled home Cox while Furino scored
on Dixon’s fielder’s choice.
Dixon, Santore and Furino each slapped two hits for the
Penguins while Dixon drove in two
runs. |
