Baseball: Penguins Split High Scoring Doubleheader
With WIU
Macomb, Ill. -- The Youngstown State baseball team
spilt a wild run-filled doubleheader
with Western Illinois on Saturday
winning game one 20-19 before losing
game two 25-15. In the two games,
the team's combined for 79 runs
scored, 85 hits and 15 home runs.
On the afternoon for the Penguins (10-13-1 overall and 2-4 in
the Mid-Con), YSU's Kellen Dixon hit
two grand slams -- one in each game
-- and finished with 11 RBI. Each
position player in both games for
both teams had at least one hit
while the teams combined to have 28
multi-hit performances.
In game one, YSU jumped out to a 17-9 before the Leathernecks
(4-20 and 3-3) rallied for nine runs
in the bottom of the seventh to take
a 18-17 lead. YSU scored three runs
in the top of the eighth and Mike
Abdalla came on to earn the save in
the ninth after a solo homer by
Bryan Hinson brought WIU within one
run. The Leathernecks hit six homers
in game one. Jonathan Smart earned
the win allowing just three runs in
2.1 innings pitched.
In game two, YSU led 6-4 entering the bottom of the second
before WIU scoring 14 unanswered
runs to build an 18-6 lead. The
Penguins scored six runs in the
seventh and one in the eighth to
creep within 18-13, but the
Leathernecks tacked on seven runs in
the eighth and won 25-15.
For the Penguins, Dixon, Joe Marzano, Jim Lipinski and Aaron
Cox homered. Kevin Koeneman had five
hits and six RBI for the
Leathernecks. |
