Baseball: Penguins Take Two From Leathernecks
Macomb, Ill. -- After two slugfest's the previous day,
the Youngstown State baseball team
relied on solid effort by pitcher
Brad Hennessey and some timely
hitting to take both games of a
doubleheader against Western
Illinois on Sunday at Vince Grady
Field winning 10-8 and 11-7.
In game one, the Penguins (12-13-1 and 4-4) were able to hold
on to a 10-5 lead en route to a 10-8
victory as Kendall Schlabach
finished the contest with three
hits. Also in game one, Joe
Marzano's 22-game hitting streak was
snapped with an 0-for-5 performance
at the plate. Hennessey tossed a
seven-inning complete game allowing
seven runs -- four earned -- on 10
hits while he struck out a
career-high 11. The Penguins won
three games out of four in the
series.
In the first game, Schlabach had three hits as the Penguins
scored nine runs in the first three
innings. Corey Ohalek earned the
victory for YSU. Mike Abdalla picked
up his second save of the weekend.
Abdalla came on in the seventh with
YSU leading 10-7 and allowed the
first three batters to reach base,
allowing a run, before getting two
strikeouts and groundout to end the
contest as WIU (4-22 and 4-4) left
the bases loaded.
Hennessey's performance was the highlight of game two
allowing 10 hits, but picking up 10
strikeouts and saving a tapped YSU
bullpen. WIU jumped out to 2-0 lead
in the first and led 6-0 after
adding four runs in the fourth. But
YSU erupted for six runs in the
fifth highlighted by a Todd Santore
double to tie the game. In the
seventh, the Penguins struck for
five more runs as Clint Ford hit a
two-run double in the rally.
The Leathernecks added a run in the bottom of the inning and
with the tying run at the plate,
Hennessey retired Troy Shelby on a
fly out to left field.
The Penguins return to action on Tuesday when they are
scheduled to play at Akron. |
