Cleveland State Pulls Out 6-4 League Win Over
Penguins
Niles, Ohio -- The Youngstown State baseball team lost
a tough 6-4 contest to Cleveland
State in the opener of a four-game
weekend series on Friday night at
Cafaro Field.
The Penguins (9-15 overall and 3-3 in the Horizon League) had
an opportunity to keep their
comeback chances alive in the bottom
of the ninth but came up short. With
two outs and a runner on first, CSU
catcher Doug Besozzi trapped a
foul-tipped third strike by Jim
Lipinski in the dirt and after a
lengthy discussion by the umpires
Lipinski was ruled out giving
Cleveland State (8-20 and 3-3) the
hard-fought win.
The Vikings' David Boyza (1-5) picked up his first win of the
season scattering 10 hits in seven
innings while striking out four and
giving up four runs -- all earned.
Zizelman earned the save pitching
the final two innings.
Two freshmen and a sophomore combined to pitch the nine
innings for the Penguins. Freshman
Chris Dennis started and suffered
the loss allowing three runs in 4.1
innings. Freshman Todd Tscherne
pitched 2.2 innings allowing three
earned runs and sophomore Paul Yates
pitched the final two surrendering
two hits and no runs.
CSU jumped on the scoreboard with a run in the first on a single by
Dominic Erney, but YSU answered
tying the game on a Jim Phillips
single to score Adam Cox in the
bottom of the inning.
The Vikings scored twice in the fifth on a single by Tom
Allen and double by Besozzi. YSU cut
the 3-1 in half when Kendall
Schlabach tripled and scored on a
groundout by Cox.
In the seventh, Allen doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly
by Pat Smith and the Vikings
extended the lead to 6-2 with two
runs in the eighth.
But YSU mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth Lipinski
doubled to open the inning and
Phillips was hit by a pitch. Clint
Ford followed with a single to left
and Matt Speas, pinch hitting for
Tim Stacey, was nicked by a pitch to
score Lipinski. Kyle Penrod hit a
sacrifice fly scoring Phillips to
cut the deficit to 6-4.
Yates held the Vikings in check for the next two innings
setting up the wild ending. Ty
Furino walked to open the inning and
was thrown out at second as
Schlabach reached on fielder's
choice. Cox struck out watching a
3-2 pitch and with a 1-2 count
Lipinski fouled the ball that
Besozzi kept out of the dirt.
The two teams are scheduled to play a two seven-inning
doubleheader games on Saturday at
Cafaro set for 1 p.m. |
