Penguins Come Up Short Against Duquesne, 5-3
Niles, Ohio -- The Youngstown State baseball team
stayed close all afternoon, but
could never grab the lead as the
Penguins dropped a 5-3 decision to
Duquesne 5-3 on Tuesday at Cafaro
Field.
The Dukes, who beat the Penguins last week 10-6 in
Pittsburgh, never trailed and took
advantage of strong pitching
performances by Ken Strader and
Eduardo Vivoni as the duo
surrendered just five hits in the
game. YSU (11-17) cut a 4-1 deficit
to 4-3 in the sixth but could get no
closer in the game.
Duquesne (20-17) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Jim
Onder scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jason Startari. YSU tied the game in
the bottom of the third when Clint
Ford scored on Ty Furino's single up
the middle.
In the fourth, the Dukes added two runs on an RBI double by
Startari and a run-scoring single by
Brian Frey. Duquesne added a run in
the fifth when Gary Lee ripped a
double to deep left center scoring
Dan Schartzbauer from first off
reliever Chris Dennis. Todd Tsherne
(0-3) suffered the loss allowing
three runs on five hits in four
innings. Tsherne struck out two and
walked one.
In the sixth, YSU closed the gap against Srader. With two
outs and Jim Lipinski at second and
Jim Phillips at first, Strader
fielded a ground ball by Kyle Penrod
and threw it past first baseman Mike
Duganich allowing Lipinski to score.
After Adam Cox was hit to load the
bases, Phillips scored on a wild
pitch. Kyle Smith walked to load the
bases again before Clint Ford
grounded out to third.
In the seventh, YSU threatened again with two runners on and
no outs. Vivoni replaced Strader in
the jam and after Tim Stacey reached
on a fielder's choice that forced
out Furino at second and moved
Shlabach to third he struck out
Lipinski. Stacey moved up to second
on a wild pitch but Phillips flied
out to centerfield to end the
inning.
Duquesne added a run in the eighth when Pete Maropis homered
to left off Mike Abdalla.
The Penguins return to league action on Friday when they
begin a four-game series at Butler. |
