Penguins Lose Lead Falling at Duquesne 10-6
Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The Youngstown State baseball team
let a two-run lead slip away as
Duquesne scored eight unanswered
runs and the Dukes held on for a
10-6 victory at Duquesne Field on a
warm Tuesday afternoon.
The Penguins (7-14) jumped out to a 3-1 lead before Duquesne
(18-14) scored once in the fourth,
twice in the fifth and five times in
the sixth to pull out the
come-from-behind victory. YSU closed
within 9-6 with three runs in the
seventh, but could get no closer.
The loss came on a tough day for the
Penguins who found out earlier
Tuesday that the Horizon League
announced that Illinois-Chicago's
protest of YSU's 3-2 game two win of
a doubleheader on April 6 was
upheld. The decision takes a league
victory away from Youngstown State
and loss from the Flames.
At Duquesne, the Penguins took a 1-0 lead in the first and a
3-1 lead after three innings. In the
first inning Kendall Schlabach
doubled and scored on double by Jim
Lipinski. In the third, YSU broke
open a 1-1 game with a two-run third
inning. Kyle Penrod singled home
Lipinski and Adam Cox for the
Penguins.
But Duquesne scored once in the fourth and took a 4-3 lead in
the fifth on an RBI triple by Pete
Maropis and a sacrifice fly by Sean
Wilson. In the sixth, the Dukes
scored five runs to break the game
open.
Trailing 9-3 in the seventh YSU rallied for three runs with
Lipinski, Cox and Clint Ford all
scoring, however with two outs Kyle
Smith was thrown out at home trying
to score from second base on
Schlabach single to end the inning.
Todd Tscherne (0-2) suffered the loss for YSU allowing three
runs in three innings. Starter Chris
Dennis allowed on run in two
innings, reliever Matt Gnacinski
allowed five runs -- three earned --
on three hits in just two-thirds of
an inning and Mike Hosterman
performed well allowing one run in
2.1 innings while striking out four.
The Penguins return to action on Wednesday when they play a
doubleheader against Detroit at
Cafaro Field. The first pitch is set
for 2:30 p.m.
The game between the Flames and Penguins will be finished
from the play in question in the
bottom of the eighth, only if it
will affect the seeding of either
team in the Horizon League
Tournament, which will be held from
May 22-26 hosted by Cleveland State.
The makeup date would be May 21 at
Cafaro Field in Niles, Ohio site of
the April 6 game. |
