Butler's Neshek Outduels YSU's Ohalek in 1-0
Penguins Loss
Cleveland, Ohio -- Youngstown State junior lefthander
Corey Ohalek tossed a complete-game
seven-hitter allowing an unearned
run but Butler's Pat Neshek was
equally as sharp throwing a
complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win
at Jacobs Field in the Horizon
League Tournament on Thursday night,
The Penguins (18-25) will have to play top-seed
Illinois-Chicago at 2:30 p.m. on
Friday, while Butler (33-21) plays
UW-Milwaukee on Friday at 6:30 p.m..
Ohalek (5-7) gave up his only run of the night with one out
in the top of the ninth inning.
Butler's Jeff Steele and Paul Beck
opened the final inning with
consecutive singles. After Jeff
Albert fouled a sacrifice-bunt
attempt off for a strikeout, Ryan
Nance hit a ball to YSU's Jim
Lipinski at first base, but Lipinski
mishandled the ball and it rolled
into right field allowing Steele to
score from second with the games
only run.
In the contest, Ohalek gave up seven hits and struck out six
while walking one -- the first
batter of the game. Neshek (4-6)
allowed just five hits and struck
out six while walking none.
YSU's best chance to produce a run came in the eighth inning.
Kyle Smith, who had two of the five
hits, led off the inning with a
single and moved to second on a
sacrifice bunt by Ty Furino. Kendall
Schalbach grounded out to short
advancing Smith to third, but Jim
Phillips struck out to end the
inning. Smith was the only Penguin
to lead off an inning, and reach
third base on the night.
Besides Smith's two base hits, Tim Stacey, Adam Cox and Clint
Ford all had singles. |
