Kent State Rolls Past Penguins 11-5
Niles, Ohio -- The Youngstown State baseball team struggled out of the gate and by the time the Penguins found some offense it was too late in an 11-5 loss to Kent State on Tuesday night at Cafaro Field.
The Penguins (12-20) trailed 9-0 before breaking a 21-inning scoreless drought in the bottom of the eighth scoring five runs, but KSU (26-12) held for its 10th consecutive victory and win all three games against YSU this season.
Shortstop James Swearengen was a key figure on the night for the Penguins. Swearengen made his first pitching appearance of the year tossing 4.1 innings allowing four runs on four hits. He walked three while striking out three. Chris Dennis (0-3) started and allowed three runs on six hits in 3.2 innings while Mike Hosterman allowed four runs in one inning of relief.
Offensively, the Penguins had nine hits with two each by Kendall Schlabach and Jim Phillips.
Kent State had 14 hits and left 15 runners on base in the contest. Eric O'Brien belted a solo home run and had a three-run double to lead the onslaught. O'Brien also scored three runs. Brady Glass had three hits while four other Golden Flashes had two hits.
KSU scored once in the second, twice in the third, fourth in the fifth and two in the seventh to take a 9-0 lead. YSU made things interesting in the eighth scoring five times. In the ninth, Eric Holick added a couple of insurance runs with a two-run homer to right field
The Penguins play at Ohio State on Wednesday night at Bill Davis Stadium. The first pitch, in a game televised on the Ohio News Network, is slated for 6:35 p.m.
