Penguins Rally Comes Up Just Short in 6-5 Loss at OSU
Columbus, Ohio -- A late comeback by the Youngstown State baseball team came up just short in a 6-5 loss to Ohio State on Wednesday night at Bill Davis Stadium.
The Penguins (12-21) trailed 6-0 after four innings before scoring twice in the fifth and three times in the seventh to pull within one run at 6-5. After a scoreless eighth, YSU had the tying run at first and the lead run at second before Kyle Penrod groundout to first base to end the game. With the win, Ohio State (26-13-1) beat the Penguins for the sixth straight time and 11th time in the last 12 meetings.
The Buckeyes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning scoring three runs off YSU starter Corey Ohalek (3-5). Ohio State extended the lead scoring three times in the fourth, but with a steady rain falling, the Penguins fought back.
With two outs in the fifth, Adam Cox ripped a double off the wall to get things started. Tim Stacey followed with a single to advance Cox to third and James Swearengen hit an RBI single to score Cox. Kendall Schlabach, who had three hits in the game, knocked in Stacey to cut the deficit to 6-2.
In the seventh, Clint Ford doubled to open the inning. Adam Cox walked and pinch hitter Ty Furino delivered a sacrifice bunt moving the runners up.
Swearengen then hit a two-hopper to third and Ford evaded a run-down situation by sliding under the tag on wild throw as Cox moved up to third and Swearengen took second. Cox scored on a passed ball and Schlabach singled home Swearengen to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The Buckeyes brought in Brandon Steen close out the game in the ninth. Cox greeted Steen with a base hit up the middle. After two outs, Steen hit Schlabach to put runners at first and second. With Kyle Penrod at the plate, Steen uncorked a wild pitch allowing the runners to move into scoring position. But Steen picked up his fifth save when Penrod grounded out to Doug Dendinger.
OSU’s Matt Davis (3-0) earned the victory pitching three scoreless innings to open the game. Davis allowed one hit and struck out two.
On the evening, YSU had four pitchers toss two innings each. Ohalek allowed three runs on six hits and struck out one in his two innings of work. Freshman Todd Tscherne also allowed three runs in two innings surrendering two hits and five walks. Sophomore Paul Yates pitched two scoreless innings walking two and striking two. Senior Mike Abdalla kept the Penguins in the game after clawing back within one run not allowing a hit in two innings. Abdalla struck out three and walked one.
Youngstown State returns to action when it begins a four-game series at Wright State on Friday night at 6:30. The Penguins and Raiders play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday in Dayton, Ohio.
