Penguins Come Up Short in 4-1 Loss at Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh baseball team
overcame cold weather to defeat
Youngstown State, 4-1, Tuesday night
at Trees Field. The Panthers
improved to 33-15-1 overall while
the Penguins dropped to 17-24.
Behind 4-1 in the ninth, YSU had the bases loaded with two
outs, but Jim Lipinski popped up to
short to end the game.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the first inning after Kendall
Schlabach scored on a double by Adam
Cox, Pittsburgh quickly tallied two
runs to take a lead it would never
relinguish. The Panthers scored
their first run as Brant Colamarino
hit a sacrifice fly that scored Tony
Railing. Two batters later, Rolando
Bello roped a run-scoring triple
down the right field line, proving
to be the game-winner.
Pittsburgh added another run in the fifth inning as
Colamarino, who led the Panthers
with two hits, scored on a balk and
plated its final run in the eighth
inning as Scott Folmar lined an
RBI-single to center field that
scored Michael Bell.
P.J. Hiser (Hagerstown, Md./Hagerstown) picked up his sixth
victory of the season as he pitched
the first five innings, scattering
four hits and striking out five
batters. Jeff Barnyak (Philipsburg,
Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) pitched the
next 3.2 innings and gave up no runs
before giving way to Brad Webb for
the final out to record his first
career save.
Chris Dennis suffered the loss for Youngstown State, pitching
four innings and striking out two
Panthers. Adam Cox totaled two
doubles to pace the Penguins at the
plate. Todd Tscherne pitched two
innings while James Swearengen and
Mike Abdalla each pitched an inning.
YSU plays host to Toledo at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Cafaro
