Penguins Split Doubleheader with UW-Milwaukee
Niles, Ohio -- The Youngstown State Baseball team won
the first game of their doubleheader
on Saturday afternoon at Cafaro
Field overcoming a 7-0 deficit
scoring eight runs in the bottom of
the sixth inning for an 8-7 victory
over UW-Milwaukee. In game two, the
Panthers’ Geoff Lefeber tossed a
two-hitter as UW-Milwaukee won 6-0.
The Penguins (17-23 and 11-8 in the Horizon) trailed 7-0
before mounting their comeback. In
the sixth, Youngstown State had six
hits against three Panther pitchers.
UWM starter Aaron Bushong was in
control before walking Jim Phillips,
allowing a double to Adam Cox and a
single by Clint Ford. Reliever Mikel
Schaffer walked pinch hitter Matt
Speas to load the bases before
registering the first out of the
inning.
With one out, the Penguins scored a run on a single, and a
bases loaded walk to knock Schaffer
out of the contest. Matt Freisleben,
who retired all seven YSU batters he
faced on Friday entered the game
looking for his 15th save. But
Phillips singled and Freisleben
threw wildly to first allowing two
runs to score as YSU tied the game
at seven. With James Swearengen on
third, Cox hit a sacrifice fly to
right field to score the go ahead
run.
In the top of the seventh, Matt Brumit (4-4) allowed an
infield single and Mike Abdalla came
on for the Penguins. With one out,
Charlie Reschke singled and with
runners on first and second Matt
Alexander hit into a game-ending
double play. Abdalla picked up his
third save of the season. Kendall
Schlabach and Jim Phillips led an
11-hit attack with two hits each and
seven different Penguins had an RBI.
In game two, UWM scored a run in the first, and five unearned
runs in the fifth to post a 6-0
victory. Corey Ohalek (4-6) pitched
a complete game scattering seven
hits, allowing one earned run, while
striking out six and walking three.
Lefeber allowed a first-inning single and a fourth-inning
single for his only two hits of the
game. He improved to 4-0 on the
season in a game where he did not
walk or strikeout a batter.
The Penguins and Panthers conclude their four-game series on
Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cafaro Field. |
