Panthers Hold Off Penguins to Earn 7-6 Victory
Niles, Ohio --
The Youngstown State baseball team
mounted another late comeback bid,
but came up just short losing the
first game of a key four-game series
to Horizon-League leader
UW-Milwaukee 7-6 on a brisk Friday
night at Cafaro Field.
The Penguins (16-22 overall and 10-7 in the league) trailed
7-0 before scoring five runs in the
sixth and one in the seventh, but
UWM's Matt Freisleben retired all
seven batters he faced to earn his
14th save and preserve the one-run
win. The Panthers (28-14 and 13-4)
have won a school-record 13
consecutive games.
For the first half of the game, YSU struggled to get things
going. In the second, UWM scored
twice and in the third, Dave
Pudlosky belted a two-out three-run
homer, his first of the year, to put
UWM ahead 5-0. Steve Guden followed
with a two-out double and Shane
Davis singles and scored Guden to
put the Panthers ahead 6-0. In the
sixth, YSU starter Jonathan Smart
allowed an unearned run on a
grounder by David Michna to score
Troy Doering that Ty Furino couldn't
handle.
Smart (3-2) tossed six innings suffering the loss. He allowed
seven hits and seven runs -- just
four earned -- while walking five
and striking out one. Two of his
walks came with two outs in the
third before Pudlosky hit a homer to
right field.
YSU battled back in the sixth scoring five runs off three UWM
pitchers. Starter Quintin Oldenburg
(7-2) was solid for the first five
innings before the Penguins tagged
him for four runs in the sixth. Ben
Stancyzk relieved Oldenburg but did
not retire any of the two batters he
faced. Cory Kleeba recorded the
final two outs of the inning, the
second when Jim Phillips moved to
second and Mark Nightingale tried to
score on a wild pitch but was thrown
out at home.
In the seventh, Schlabach singled and after advancing to
second on a ground out by Furino
scored on a two-out double by Jim
Lipinski. After the double,
Freisleben shut the door retiring
all seven batters he faced,
including striking out three.
Youngstown State and UW-Milwaukee return to action on
Saturday when both teams meet in a
doubleheader at Noon at Cafaro
Field.
