Penguins Take Doubleheader from Wright State, 6-4,
5-3
Dayton, Ohio -- The
Youngstown State baseball team
(15-21 and 9-6 in the Horizon
League) used timely hitting and
solid pitching to earn a
doubleheader sweep over Wright State
winning 6-4 and 5-3 on Saturday
afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.
In the first game Youngstown state capitalized on five Raider
errors to win 6-4. The Penguins
scored two runs in the top of the
seventh inning to seal the victory.
Tim Lipinski reached on a error and
scored the go ahead run when he was
driven in by a Clint Ford double,
who then then scored on a fielding
error by second baseman Tom Bohr
when Mark Nightingale hit a
comebacker to the mound.
Matt Brumit improved to 3-4 on the season for the Penguins,
pitching sixth innings, allowing
four runs on nine hits, while
striking out nine batters. Mike
Abdalla picked up his second save of
the season when he shut down the
Raiders in the bottom of the
seventh.
Senior Nathan Kopp fell to 0-3 on the season. Kopp went all
seven innings for the Raiders,
giving up six runs -- two earned --
on seven hits, while striking out
nine batters.
In game two Youngstown State designated hitter Mark
Nightingale provided all the offense
the Penguins needed in a 5-3
victory. Nightingale went 2-2, with
two home runs, four RBI's and two
runs scored.
Senior Nick Shields (Rockford, IL/Harlem H.S.) led the way
offensively for the Raiders, going
2-4, with his fifth home run of the
season.
Corey Ohalek improves to 4-5 on the season for Youngstown
State. Ohalek pitched five innings,
allowing two runs on eight hits,
while striking out eight batters.
Clint Ford pitched the bottom of the
seventh inning to pick up his second
save of the season.
Senior Brian Stephens fell to 4-7 on the season, pitching a
complete seven innings, allowing
five runs -- four earned -- on nine
hits, while striking out five
batters.
Wright State is now 15-28 on the season and 7-11 in the
Horizon League. The Raiders will
host Youngstown State at Nischwitz
Stadium for the game four tomorrow,
May 5, scheduled for 1 p.m. start. |
