Butler Scores Five in Ninth, Defeats YSU, 7-4
    Niles, Ohio --
The Youngstown State baseball team (19-19, 7-6 Horizon) scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Butler Bulldogs (22-21, 8-5) answered by tallying five runs in the top of the ninth en route to a 7-4 victory on Friday night at Cafaro Field.
In the ninth, the Bulldogs banged out four straight hits with one out to tie the score at four, then pinch hitter Jeff Albert ripped an RBI single to center to score Jonathan Day and give Butler the lead.  The Bulldogs added two unearned runs on a passed ball and a throwing error to claim a 7-4 advantage.
The Penguins made one last bid in the bottom of the ninth when Gary Hinkson drew a one out walk and J.D. Hannan singled to right to put two runners on, but Butler shortstop Jared Lowe made a sensational diving stop towards the middle and started a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Butler got on the board first in the top of the second when Justin McKinley doubled to the gap in leftcenter to score Lowe and added a run in the seventh on a solo homer to left from Day.
The Penguin offense answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth by banging out two hits and capitalizing on two Bulldog miscues.  With one out, Hannan reached on a throwing error and moved to third when Ty Furino singled to centerfield.  Kendall Schlabach then singled to right to score Hannan, and Furino scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at two.  Schlabach eventually scored on a fielder's choice and Brandon Caipen came home on a throwing error to give the Penguins a 4-2 advantage.
Randy Miles earned his second victory of the season for the Bulldogs in 1.2 innings of relief.  Eric Shaffer took the loss for the Penguins, throwing 8.1 innings and striking out seven hitters.  Butler starter Cory Kugle pitched 7.1 innings and retired the first eight hitters of the game but did not factor in the decision.
With the win, Butler takes sole possession of second place in the Horizon League.
The Penguins, who suffered three straight shutouts to the Bulldogs last season, ended a 30.2 inning scoring drought with their runs in the eighth.
The Bulldogs and Penguin will square off tomorrow in a doubleheader tomorrow at noon at Cafaro Field.
