Butler Claims Doubleheader Sweep; 6-2, 4-2
Niles, Ohio -- The Butler Bulldogs
scored four unearned runs in game
one, then Luke Behning outdueled
Corey Ohalek in game two en route to
a twin-bill sweep over the
Youngstown State baseball team
(19-21, 7-8), 6-2 and 4-2, on
Saturday afternoon at Cafaro Field.
In game one, YSU outhit Butler 9-8 but could not overcome
three costly errors in a 6-2 Bulldog
triumph. Behning picked up his
fifth win of the season in game two,
allowing two runs in 6.2 innings
while walking four. Ohalek
threw his fifth complete game of the
year, allowing four runs and
striking out seven hitters in a
losing effort.
Charles Schultz led the Penguins with five hits on the day in
eight trips while Justin Banks had
four hits. Jared Lowe and Ryan
Nance paced the Bulldogs with three
hits apiece.
In game one, Butler took a three-run advantage in the top of
the third by banging out three hits
and capitalizing on a Penguin error.
With one out, Lowe doubled to right,
bringing home Paul Beck. One
batter later, Nance ripped a double
down the left field line, scoring
Dale Mueller and Lowe.
The Bulldgos added a run in the sixth when Mueller singled
home Jonathan Day, but the Penguins
answered with two runs in the bottom
of the inning.
With two outs, Adam Cox and Banks hit back-to-back singles to
put runners on first and second,
then Brandon Caipen walked to load
the bases. Gary Hinkson then
reached on an error, scoring Cox and
Banks. YSU loaded the bases
again, but starter Jon Olson forced
a strikeout to end the threat.
Butler added two insurance runs in the seventh on a two-run
double from Stephen Gill.
In the game, Olson picked up his second win of the season,
allowing two unearned runs and
scattering nine hits. Kyle
Sobecki allowed six runs, two
earned, and struck out 10 hitters in
his third compete game of the season
in a losing effort.
In game two, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the second
inning
on four hits. With one out,
Justin McKinley singled home Lowe
and later scored when Jon Freeman
singled to leftcenter.
The Penguins cut the lead to 2-1 when they tallied a run in
the bottom of the third when Schultz
scored on a sacrifice fly from Brian
Boone.
Butler, however, plated a run in the fifth on an RBI double
from Mueller and added a solo homer
from Nance in the sixth to take a
4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Penguins got within two
runs and had the tying run on
second, but could not force the game
into extra frames. Caipen drew
a one out walk and advanced to
second when Schultz singled to
center to put runners on first and
second to get the rally going.
Banks followed with an RBI single to
center and advanced on an error to
put the tying run on second.
However, Hinkson lined a shot right
back at reliever Ryan Chenoweth for
the final out of the game.
The Penguins and Bulldogs will conclude their four-game
series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
at Cafaro Field. |
