Shaffer Sparkles in 3-1 Win Over Cleveland State
Eastlake, Ohio -- Freshman Eric Shaffer outdueled
Cleveland State's Matt Kaltenbach
allowing just one run in a
nine-strikeout nine-inning complete
game as the YSU baseball team came
back to earn a 3-1 win in the series
opener at the Eastlake Ballpark on
Friday night.
YSU (16-17 overall and 4-5 in the Horizon League) scored all
three runs in the seventh inning on
a solo home run by Jim Lipinski and
a two-out two-RBI single by Kendall
Schlabach as Shaffer threw 109
pitchers while improving to 3-0 on
the season.
The Penguins fell behind in the second inning when Cleveland
State (6-18 and 2-2) manufacture its
lone run of the ballgame. Brian
Beaumier scored on a single by Jeff
Katlen.
After allowing the run, Shaffer settled down retiring 10
straight at one point. In the game,
he allowed just five hits, all
singles and retired the final eight
batters of the game.
While Shaffer was mowing down the Vikings, YSU's offense
picked one inning to decide the
game.
In the seventh, Lipinski led off the inning with a line drive
that struck the top of the fence and
went out of the yard for his fourth
homer of the season. With two outs,
the Penguins took advantage of
Kaltenbach's first walk in three
games to take the lead for good.
Jim Phillips walked on four pitches and Gary Hinkson followed
with a single up the middle. Ty
Furino kept the inning going with a
bunt single down the third-base line
setting the stage for Schlabach.
Schlabach drilled a single into
right field scoring Phillips from
third and Hinkson from second. After
Schlabach stole second, Caipen
popped up to end the inning.
Schlabach and Justin Banks finished with two hits each to
lead the YSU offense, which had nine
hits of of Kaltenbach (4-2).
The Penguins and Vikings resume the series on Saturday with
two seven-inning games beginning at
1 p.m. Game four is scheduled for
Sunday afternoon. |
