Five Run First Keys Golden Flash Victory, 5-3
Kent, Ohio --
The Kent State Golden Flashes
(15-12) overcame an early 1-0
deficit by scoring five runs in the
bottom of the first inning that
keyed a 5-3 victory over the
Youngstown State baseball team
(15-17) on Wednesday afternoon at
Gene Michael Field.
Brandon Caipen tripled with one out in the first inning and
scored on a sacrifice fly from Jim
Lipinski to put the Penguins on the
board with a 1-0 advantage, but the
Golden Flashes answered by scoring
five runs in the bottom half of the
inning on three hits including a
two-run home run by Eric O'Brien.
Down 5-1 in the top of the second, the Penguins climbed back
into the contest by plating two runs
on four hits. Justin Banks got
the offense going with a leadoff
double to the gap in rightcenter and
advanced to third on a single to
center from Gary Hinkson. Two
batters later, J.J. Newman singled
home Banks and advanced Hinkson to
second. Kendall Schlabach
followed with an RBI single through
the right side to get the Penguins
within two at 5-3.
Kent State's Chad Wagler did not allow another run in his
five innings of work and Kyle
Augsburger and Gus Hlebovy combined
for four scoreless innings in relief
to seal the win.
Justin Thomas was tagged with the loss for the Penguins,
surrendering four earned runs in one
inning. Brian Boone and Chris
Dennis combined to allow just three
hits in seven scoreless innings of
relief.
Schlabach finished with two hits and an RBI while Banks had
two hits and a run scored to lead
the Penguins at the plate.
The Penguins will travel to Cleveland State to take on the
Vikings in a four-game series on
Friday. First pitch at
Eastlake Ballpark, the home of the
Cleveland Indians' class-A affiliate
Lake County Captains, is set for 3
