Golden Flashes Oulast Penguins, Prevail in 11th, 4-2
Niles, Ohio --
Freshman Brandon Caipen ripped an
RBI single in the bottom of the
ninth to force extra innings, but
the Kent State Golden Flashes
(24-21) scored two unearned runs in
the top of the 11th inning en route
to a 4-2 victory over the Youngstown
State (20-22) baseball team on
Tuesday evening at Cafaro Field.
Both the Golden Flashes and Penguins tallied a run in the
fourth and ninth innings before Kent
State broke the game open in the
11th. Gus Hlebovy threw three
innings in relief for the Golden
Flashes to pick up the win while
Josh Wells surrendered two unearned
runs in 1.2 innings in his first
loss of the year. Chris Dennis
allowed one run on three hits while
striking out 10 in seven innings for
the Penguins.
The Golden Flashes got on the board first in the top of the
fourth when Chris Welsch capitalized
on Dennis' only mistake of the
contest and drove a home run over
the leftfield wall to give Kent
State a 1-0 lead.
YSU, however, answered right back with a run of their own in
the bottom half of the fourth.
After Adam Cox singled and advanced
to second on a single from Jim
Phillips, Brian Boone drove home Cox
on a single through the left side to
tie the score at one.
Dennis and Kevin Libeg held the Golden Flashes scoreless
until the ninth when Eric O'Brien
scored an unearned run on a
sacrifice fly from Kurt Eichorn.
The Penguins did not give up, however, and tied the game in
the bottom half of the ninth to
force extra innings. With two
outs and Ty Furino on first, Kendall
Schlabach singled up the middle to
put runners on the corners.
Then, Caipen stepped up and ripped a
pitch from Hlebovy back up the
middle to tie the score at two and
send the game into extra frames.
In the 11th, the Golden Flashes scored both of their runs
with two outs on an RBI double from
Todd Balduf and an RBI single by
Matt Sega. Hlebovy retired the
side in order in the bottom of the
11th.
Schlabach finished with three hits on the day to lead the
Penguins while Welsch had two hits
for the Golden Flashes.
Dennis, Libeg and Wells combined to strikeout 18 hitters in
the contest.
The Penguins will host the Wright State Raiders in a Horizon
League showdown on Friday night at
Cafaro Field. The Penguins are
currently one game ahead of the
Raiders in the Horizon League
standings and have won seven of the
last eight meetings. WNIO 1390
AM will broadcast the game live with
first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. |
