Toledo Grabs 14-3 Triumph Over Penguins
Niles, Ohio -- The
Toledo Rockets (14-19) took an early
6-0 lead and thwarted a Penguin
rally by scoring the final eight
runs in a 14-3 victory over the
Youngstown State baseball team
(19-18) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Rockets grabbed an early advantage with five runs in the
top of the fourth and a run in the
fifth, but the Penguins got within
three by plating a run in the sixth
and two in the seventh.
Toledo, however, tallied six runs in
the top of the eighth and added two
more in the ninth to close out the
win.
Toledo took a 5-0 lead in the fourth by banging out four
hits, including three straight RBI
singles, and capitalizing on three
walks. J.D. Foust singled to
left field in the fifth to bring
home Mitch Maier to give the Rockets
a six run advantage.
YSU began to chip away at the six-run deficit by scoring a
run in the bottom of the sixth by
capitalizing on a Rocket miscue and
adding two runs in the seventh.
With one out in the seventh, Charles
Schultz and Jim Lipinski ripped
back-to-back RBI singles, scoring
Kendall Schlabach and Brandon
Caipen, to get the Penguins within
three. However, Toledo's Ian
Baltzer forced a double play to end
the inning with the three run lead
still in tact.
The Rockets built off the momentum and scored six runs on
four hits in the next half inning
and added two runs in the ninth.
Caipen, Schultz and Lipinski each had two hits for the
Penguins. Starter Chris Dennis
pitched three scoreless innings for
YSU but did not factor in the
decision while Brian Boone picked up
his first loss of the season.
Maier led the Rockets at the plate with three hits, three
runs scored and two RBIs while Phil
Pilewski drove in three runs.
Starter Mitch Hayes earned his first
victory of the season by throwing
five scoreless innings.
The Penguins will continue their Horizon League schedule on
Friday when they host the Butler
Bulldogs at 7:05 p.m. at Cafaro
Field. WNIO 1390 AM will
broadcast the game as the second
contest of it's four-game package
for the 2003 campaign. The
Bulldogs and Penguins are currently
tied for second place in the Horizon
League standings. |
