Buttle, Ohalek Key Doubleheader Sweep Over Detroit, 4-3; 3-0
Niles, Ohio -- Ross
Buttle hit a game-winning RBI single
in the bottom of the eighth in game
one and Corey Ohalek threw a
four-hit shutout in game two as the
Youngstown State baseball team
(15-14, 3-4 Horizon) swept a
doubleheader over the Detroit Titans
(6-16, 2-4), 4-3 and 3-0, on a sunny
Saturday afternoon at Cafaro Field.
Down 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third in the early
contest, the Penguins scored one run
in the third and one in the sixth,
seventh and eighth innings to claim
the 4-3 victory. Ohalek's
threw his second shutout of the
season and struck out four Titans
while walking only one in game two.
In game one, Detroit jumped out to an early two-run lead in
the first inning by capitalizing on
a YSU miscue. Roger Wechter
and Tim Poley each had sacrifice
flies in the inning.
The Titans added one more when Mike Mitrevski singled down
the left field line to bring home
Poley in the top of the third.
Brandon Caipen got the Penguin offense going when he doubled
home Justin Banks in the bottom of
the third to get YSU within two, but
Detroit's Keith Astraukus held the
Penguins scoreless until the bottom
of the sixth.
Adam Cox singled home Caipen in the bottom of the sixth to
get the Penguins within one, then
Kendall Schlabach drove home J.D.
Hannan in the bottom of the seventh
on a groundout to force extra
innings.
After Josh Wells pitched a scoreless top of the eighth,
Charles Schultz drove a leadoff
triple to the gap in right center to
put the winning run on third.
Detroit elected to issue Cox and Jim
Phillips intentional walks to put
the force play in effect, but Buttle
came through in the clutch with the
game-winner.
In game two, Matt Speas gave the Penguins a one-run advantage
with an RBI single in the bottom of
the second that brought home
Phillips. Phillips and Jim
Lipinski had back-to-back RBI
singles in the bottom of the third
to increase the YSU lead to 3-0.
Detroit loaded the bases in the top of the sixth on two
errors and a single up the middle
from Poley, but Ohalek workout out
of the jam by forcing a groundout to
end the inning.
Wells picked up his first collegiate victory in game one,
throwing two scoreless innings in
relief. Sobecki pitched six
innings but did not factor in the
decision. Astrauckas and Omar
Diaz each threw a complete game for
Detroit.
Banks finished with two hits in each contest to lead the
Penguins at the plate.
With the doubleheader sweep, Head Coach Mike Florak earned
his 100th and 101st victories at the
helm of the Penguins.
YSU now holds an 11-2 record at Cafaro Field and has won
four-straight contests.
The Titans and Penguins conclude their four-game series
tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at
Cafaro Field. |
