Penguins Drop 8-3 Decision to Detroit
Niles, Ohio -- The
Detroit Titans (7-16, 3-4 Horizon)
scored eight unanswered runs and
overcame a 3-0 deficit to snap the
Youngstown State baseball team's
(15-15, 3-5) four-game winning
streak in a 8-3 victory on Sunday
afternoon at Cafaro Field.
After YSU opened up with three runs in the first, Detroit
plated one run in the second, two in
the fourth, two in the seventh, one
in the eighth and two more in the
ninth. Detroit's Tim Poley
went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run
and also picked up the win, pitching
3.2 scoreless innings in relief.
The Penguins took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning by
tallying three runs with two outs in
the inning. Charles Schultz
got the offense rolling with a walk
and Adam Cox drove a double off the
left-centerfield wall to bring home
Schultz and give the Penguins a
one-run advantage. Jim
Phillips then followed with his
fourth home run of the season,
driving a Matt Spiess pitch over the
leftfield wall to give the Penguins
a 3-0 lead.
However, Spiess settled down and gave the Titans a chance to
climb back into the game by not
allowing another run.
Detroit got on the board on an RBI single from Mike Mitrevski
in the second, then tied up the
score when two Titans scored on a
Penguin fielding error in the
fourth.
The score stayed knotted at three until Detroit's Tim
Andrzejak broke the tie with a
two-run single to center that
brought home Mike Malley and Jason
Chapieski in the top of the seventh.
Detroit added one more run in the
eighth on a suicide squeeze and
sealed the victory on Poley's
two-run homer in the ninth.
Gary Hinkson led the Penguins at the plate with three singles
while Justin Banks and Schultz added
two hits apiece. Kevin Libeg
picked up the loss in relief.
The Penguins stranded 11 runners on
base.
The Penguins will look to rebound when they play Akron for
the fourth time of the 2003
campaign. YSU has won the
three previous meetings and will
look for the season sweep at 7 p.m.
at Cafaro Field. |
