Penguins Earn Split Against Panthers
Milwaukee, Wis. --
The Youngstown State baseball team
grabbed a 6-3 victory in game one
against UW-Milwaukee, but the
Panthers battled back to claim game
two 5-4 in a doubleheader split at
Henry Aaron Field on Saturday
afternoon.
In game one the Penguins (24-25, 12-11 Horizon) rallied from
a 3-0 deficit by scoring six
unanswered runs including plating
four runs in the sixth. The
Panthers (23-21, 11-8) broke a 4-4
tie with a run in the bottom of the
seventh for a 5-4 victory in game
two.
Kyle Sobecki picked up his fifth win in game one, scattering
six hits while striking out seven
hitters. Corey Ohalek allowed
five runs on eight hits in his
seventh complete game of the season
in a losing effort in game two.
Kendall Schlabach had two hits in each game to pace the
Penguins while Adam Cox and Justin
Banks had three hits apiece in game
one.
In game one, UW-Milwaukee grabbed an early three run lead by
tallying a run in the second and two
more in the third, but Sobecki
allowed only two hits the rest of
the way to hold the Panthers
scoreless for the final four
innings.
The Penguins got on the board in the top of the fourth when
Jim Lipinski hit an RBI single to
right to score Cox.
In the top of the sixth, YSU banged out four straight hits to
start the inning and spark a
four-run rally. Cox and Banks
singled to lead off the inning, then
Lipinski and Brian Boone hit
back-to-back RBI singles to tie the
game at three. With one out,
pinch-runner Ross Buttle scored on a
passed ball to put the Penguins up
one, then Schlabach ripped an RBI
triple to score Gary Hinkson.
The Penguins added an insurance run in the seventh when Banks
scored on a sacrifice fly from
Boone.
In game two, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly
from Troy Doering in the bottom of
the third, but the Penguins answered
right back with a run of their own
in the top of the fourth.
After Cox drew a leadoff walk and
advanced to third on a sacrifice
bunt from Banks and a wild pitch,
Lipinski ripped an RBI single to
left to tie the score at one.
YSU tallied three more runs in the top of the fifth to take a
4-1 lead. Brandon Caipen hit a
two-run single scoring Ty Furino and
Schlabach to give the Penguins the
lead. With two outs, Charles
Schultz scored on an error to
increase the lead to three.
The Panthers answered right back by tallying three runs in
the bottom of the fifth, then
manufactured a run in the seventh
for the win. Marcellus Dawson
started off the seventh with a
leadoff bunt single and advanced to
second on a sacrifice bunt.
After Dawson stole third and a
strikeout, Ben Stanczyk hit a
game-winning single to left.
The Penguins and Panthers will conclude their four-game
series tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST. |
