Defensive Blunders Hurt Penguins in 9-7 Defeat
    Niles, Ohio --
The Wright State Raiders (17-27, 8-9 Horizon League) overcame a 7-3 deficit by tallying five runs in the top of the eighth inning in a 9-7 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team (20-23, 8-9 Horizon) on Friday evening at Cafaro Field.
After Bryan Vickers hit a two-run home run in the eighth to bring the Raiders within two, the Penguins committed two defensive miscues that led to three unearned runs and gave the Wright State an 8-7 lead.  The Raiders added another unearned run in the ninth to seal the victory.
Kevin Kuntz earned his sixth win of the season for the Raiders, allowing one run in 3.2 innings of relief while Travis Koehler picked up his firs save.  Eric Shaffer scattered five hits and surrendered four runs in seven innings for the Penguins, but he did not factor in the decision.  Kevin Libeg allowed four runs in relief, three of which were unearned, in his third loss of the season.
YSU got out to an early two run lead in the bottom of the first when Kendall Schlabach reached on one of Wright State's six errors to lead off the inning.  Brandon Caipen followed with an RBI triple down the right field line and then scored on a groundout from Charles Schultz.
The Raiders, however, answered with three runs of their own in the top half of the second.  With two outs and runners on first and second, Justin Wilson ripped a two-run double to rightcenter to tie the game at two.  Two batters later, Trent Matthews singled home Wilson to give Wright State a 3-2 advantage.
Shaffer kept the Raiders scoreless for the next five frames while the Penguin offense scored the next five runs to take a 7-3 lead.
YSU plated a run in the bottom of the third when J.D. Hannan scored on a throwing error then erupted for three runs in the bottom of the third.  With two outs and runners on first and second, Schlabach ripped a two-run double down the leftfield line to give the Penguins a 5-3 advantage.  Then, two batters later, Schultz drove home Schlabach on an RBI single to right to give YSU a 6-3 lead.
The Penguins tacked a run on in the seventh when Caipen scored on one of three Raider errors in the inning.
Schultz  and Caipen each had two hits to lead the Penguins while Schlabach finished with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Wilson paced Wright State with two hits and three RBIs.
The Penguins and Raiders will continue their four-game series tomorrow when they square off in a doubleheader at noon at Cafaro Field.
