Purple Eagles Topple Penguins, 13-3
Niagara University, N.Y. --
Purple Eagle pitchers matt Ircandia
and Jeff Finucane combined to pitch
a two-hitter as the Niagara offense
banged out 15 hits en route to a
13-3 victory over Youngstown State
Tuesday afternoon at Bobo Field.
With the win, Niagara improves to 21-22 and extends its
winning streak to three games while
YSU falls to 14-27.
The Penguins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jim
Lipinski brought home Kendall
Schlabach on a sacrifice fly.
Schlabach was hit by a pitch to lead
off the inning and Brandon Caipen
followed with a single to center.
Charles Schultz then laid down a
sacrifice to advance the pair to
second and third and Lipinski
followed with his sacrifice to
right.
Niagara answered with three runs in the bottom half of the
inning on four hits and three stolen
bases. The Purple Eagles then
added five more runs in the third to
take an 8-1 lead.
After Caipen's hit, Incandia did not allow another hit until
the fifth inning when the Penguins
cut the margin to 8-2. Jim
Phillips was hit with two outs in
the inning and Jeff Solt followed
with an RBI double to left center to
plate Phillips.
The Purple Eagles, however, answered with three runs in the
fifth to take an 11-2 lead.
The Penguins scored an unearned run in the seventh, but
Niagara scored two more runs in the
bottom half of the inning for the
final tally.
Brian Boone was charged with the loss as he allowed 11 runs
in five innings. Incandia
picked up the win in six innings of
work in his first start of the
season.
Reed Eastley had four hits while Jeff Vincent and Mike Alati
had three RBIs apiece to pace the
Purple Eagles.
The Penguins will play host to Ohio on Wednesday at Eastwood
Field at 6 p.m. |
