Cox's 12th-Inning Single Lifts YSU Over Ohio, 7-6
Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State
senior Adam Cox hit an RBI single in
the bottom of the 12th inning to
lift the Penguins to a 7-6 victory
over the Ohio Bobcats Wednesday
evening at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins rallied from deficits of 4-0 and 6-4 in the
contest to end their four-game skid.
With the win, Youngstown State improves to 15-27 while Ohio
falls to 20-28.
Senior Jim Lipinski got the offense going in the 12th when he
legged out a double into shallow
center with one out and the next
batter Justin Banks was
intentionally walked. Cox then
stepped up and ripped a single past
a diving Brian White in right field
to plate Lipinski for the game
winner.
Cox finished with four hits in the game to go along with two
runs scored and two RBIs.
Lipinski added three hits and two
runs scored.
The Penguins were down 6-4 in the ninth, but Kendall
Schlabach hit a clutch two out,
two-run single to force the game
into extra frames. Cox led off
the inning with a single to right
and Brent Parks reached when OU
shortstop Brian Witt couldn't handle
a hopper at the edge of the infield
grass. Pinch hitter Jeff Solt
then laid down a sacrifice to move
the runners to second and third with
one down. Witt then made a
jumping grab on a liner from Jim
Phillips get the Penguins down to
their last out, but Schlabach's
single to center tied the contest at
6-6.
After both teams were retired in order in the first, Ohio got
two RBI hits with two outs to take a
2-0 lead. Anthony Gressick hit
a leadoff single to left center and
swiped second. Frank Santore
then retired the next two hitters,
but Brian White and Ryan Planck
followed with back-to-back
run-scoring hits to give the Bobcats
a two-run advantage.
The Bobcats added two more runs in the fourth when Planck
connected on a two-run double to
plate Gressick and Ben Crabtree.
Ohio starter Yale Silverman faced the minimum through four
innings, but the Penguin offense
caught fire with four runs in the
fifth as the first five batters
reached. Lipinski doubled to
left to lead off the inning and
Banks walked to put runners on first
and second with nobody down.
Cox followed with an RBI-double down
the left field line and Kyle Penrod
hit an RBI-single to right to cut
the margin to two. Brian Boone
then ripped an RBI-single to center
to score Cox and Phillips followed
with a sacrifice bunt to put runners
on second and third. On ball
four to Schlabach in the next at
bat, Bobcat catcher Ben Crabtree's
attempt to pick off pinch runner
Parks at third was wide, allowing
Parks to score and Boone to advance
to third.
Ohio answered immediately with a run in the sixth, however,
as Planck singled home Crabtree to
give the Bobcats a 5-4 lead.
OU tacked on another run in the
seventh without recording a hit when
Brian Colopy walked, stole second,
advanced to third on an errand throw
and scored on a wild pitch.
Andy Svitak picked up the win for the Penguins, allowing two
hits and striking out seven in three
innings of relief. Ryan
Bodenhorn was charged with the loss
as he allowed the winning run in 1
1/3 innings.
Frank Santore allowed four runs over four innings in his
first start since April 17, 2002,
for the Penguins while Clint Ford
and Paul Yates threw one scoreless
inning apiece.
Planck finished with three hits and four RBIs to lead the
Bobcats while Gressick and Witt
chipped in with two hits apiece.
The Penguins will play host to Horizon League foe
Illinois-Chicago in a four-game
series beginning Friday at 7:05 p.m.
Friday's contest will be broadcast
on WNIO 1390-AM as will Sunday's
noon affair. |
