Five-Run Fifth Paces Pittsburgh to 10-3 Victory
Niles, Ohio -- The Pittsburgh Panthers rallied from a 2-1 deficit with five runs in the top of the fifth and forced Youngstown State to strand 11 runners in a 10-3 victory Tuesday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
YSU matched Pittsburgh in the hits column with 11, but the Penguins left the bases loaded in the eighth and stranded two runners in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings.
Charles Schultz led the Penguins with three singles and a double in five at bats while Jim Lipinski and Jim Phillips chipped in with two hits apiece.  Bryan Spamer paced the Panthers with three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Panthers scored a run in the top of the first when Tom Cashman singled home Spamer with two outs to take a 1-0 lead.
Jeff Solt doubled and Phillips singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out in the third, but the Penguins came away with only one run as Pittsburgh starter Mike Bassage induced Kendall Schlabach into a double play and got Brandon Caipen to fly out to end the inning.
The Penguins took a 2-1 lead in the fourth with an unearned run as Schultz scored with the infield in when shortstop Jim Mayer's throw home was high.
Pittsburgh scored five runs in the fifth to regain the lead at 6-2 as Spamer, P.J. Hiser and Jim Negrych all had RBI hits and Peter Parise added a sacrifice fly.
The Panthers plated a run in the seventh when Spamer hit an RBI double, but the Penguins got the run back in their half of the inning as Kyle Penrod scored on a Caipen sacrifice fly.
Pittsburgh then scored three runs in the eighth on two walks and RBI hits from Alex Rybczak and Mayer to take a 10-3 lead.
YSU had a chance to cut into the lead as it loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth, but John Hay came in to strike out Penrod and force Brent Parks and Phillips into fly outs to end the inning.
Brian Boone was charged with the loss for YSU as he surrendered seven runs in seven innings.  Jimmy Blue picked up his third with of the season for the Panthers in three innings of relief.
The Penguins will travel to take on Valparaiso Wednesday at 3 p.m.
