Five-Run Fifth Paces Pittsburgh to 10-3 Victory
Niles, Ohio -- The Pittsburgh
Panthers rallied from a 2-1 deficit
with five runs in the top of the
fifth and forced Youngstown State to
strand 11 runners in a 10-3 victory
Tuesday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
YSU matched Pittsburgh in the hits column with 11, but the
Penguins left the bases loaded in
the eighth and stranded two runners
in the sixth, seventh and ninth
innings.
Charles Schultz led the Penguins with three singles and a
double in five at bats while Jim
Lipinski and Jim Phillips chipped in
with two hits apiece. Bryan
Spamer paced the Panthers with three
hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Panthers scored a run in the top of the first when Tom
Cashman singled home Spamer with two
outs to take a 1-0 lead.
Jeff Solt doubled and Phillips singled to put runners on the
corners with nobody out in the
third, but the Penguins came away
with only one run as Pittsburgh
starter Mike Bassage induced Kendall
Schlabach into a double play and got
Brandon Caipen to fly out to end the
inning.
The Penguins took a 2-1 lead in the fourth with an unearned
run as Schultz scored with the
infield in when shortstop Jim
Mayer's throw home was high.
Pittsburgh scored five runs in the fifth to regain the lead
at 6-2 as Spamer, P.J. Hiser and Jim
Negrych all had RBI hits and Peter
Parise added a sacrifice fly.
The Panthers plated a run in the seventh when Spamer hit an
RBI double, but the Penguins got the
run back in their half of the inning
as Kyle Penrod scored on a Caipen
sacrifice fly.
Pittsburgh then scored three runs in the eighth on two walks
and RBI hits from Alex Rybczak and
Mayer to take a 10-3 lead.
YSU had a chance to cut into the lead as it loaded the bases
with nobody out in the bottom of the
eighth, but John Hay came in to
strike out Penrod and force Brent
Parks and Phillips into fly outs to
end the inning.
Brian Boone was charged with the loss for YSU as he
surrendered seven runs in seven
innings. Jimmy Blue picked up
his third with of the season for the
Panthers in three innings of relief.
The Penguins will travel to take on Valparaiso Wednesday at 3
p.m. |
