Penguins Top Detroit 6-5 in 10 Innings
Detroit -- Youngstown State scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Detroit Titans 6-5 in a Horizon League contest at James K. Campbell Complex Friday afternoon.
Youngstown State (14-23, 4-6) overcame an early 3-0 deficit and took a 5-3 lead through five innings, but the Penguins allowed Detroit (10-32, 4-9) to score once in the eighth and once in the ninth to send the game into extra frames.
Jim Lipinski led the Penguins with three hits and two RBIs while Justin Banks had two hits and two RBIs.  Andy Svitak picked up his second win of the season as he surrendered one run in two innings of relief.  Justin Thomas went eight innings and struck out 11 but did not factor in the decision.
Down 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Titans got their first two runners on as Jamey Embree reached on an error and Charlie Anderson walked.  Tim Poley then stepped up and ripped a single off of Svitak's leg, but catcher Adam Cox picked up the ricochet and nailed Embree, who had rounded the bag at third, for the first out of the inning.  Svitak then forced a pop-up, but J.D. Leichtman drew a walk and pinch hitter Tim Georgewas hit by a pitch to bring home the tying run.
Cox was hit by a pitch to lead off the 10th and Brent Parks walked to put the go-ahead run in scoring position.  After a pitching change, UDM's Ben Darga retired Cox on an attempted sacrifice from Jim Phillips and got J.J. Newman to ground out for the second out.  Kendall Schlabach then hit a grounder to short that Alex Martin couldn't handle to plate Parks as the eventual winning run.
Svitak retired the Titans in order in the bottom of the 10th.
Detroit scored three runs right off the bat against Thomas as the first four Titans of the game reached safely.  Jason Chapieski was hit by a pitch to start the first and Embree followed with a walk.  Anderson then cleared the bases with a three-run bomb to right for his 11th home run of the season that gave the Titans a 3-0 advantage.  Poley doubled to right center to keep the attack alive, but Thomas got Martin to hit into a fielder's choice and mowed down Leichtman and Daniel Dobberowsky on strikes to end the inning.
YSU got on the board with two runs in the fourth when Banks and Brian Boone walked with the bases loaded to score Schlabach and Charles Schultz.
The Penguins then scored three runs in the fifth to take its first lead of the contest at 5-3.  After Schlabach singled to left and stole second, Schultz drew a two-out walk to put runners on first and second.  Lipinski then ripped a two-run double to left and Banks recorded a double of his own to score Lipinski.
Detroit cut the lead to one in the eighth when Mark Moehlig singled home Kyle Crepeau with one out.
The Penguins and Titans will continue their four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. EST.
