Penguins Fall Twice to Detroit; 10-4, 5-4
Detroit -- The Youngstown State
baseball team dropped a pair of
decisions to the Detroit Titans in a
Saturday doubleheader at the James
K. Campbell Complex.
Detroit claimed the opener 10-4 before scoring a run in the
bottom of the seventh of game two to
hold on for a 5-4 victory.
The Titans improve to 12-32 overall and 6-9 in the Horizon
League while the Penguins fall to
14-25 and 4-8.
In game two, Brandon Caipen drove home pinch-runner Clint
Ford on a sacrifice fly in the top
of the seventh to tie the score at
4-4. Brian Boone led off the
inning with a single and was
replaced by Ford. Then, with
one out, Jim Phillips doubled to
right center two batters later to
move Ford to third. Detroit
elected to intentionally walk
Kendall Schlabach to load the bases
hoping for a ground ball, but Caipen
came through to force the Titans to
bat.
Jamey Embree, however, knocked in Mike Czerwieniec for the
winning run with one out in the
bottom of the seventh.
Detroit took a 2-0 lead in the second when Tim George hit a
two-run single, but YSU took a 3-2
lead by tallying four runs in the
fourth. Caipen led off with an
infield single and scored two
batters later when Jim Lipinski
doubled to center. Justin
Banks then brought home Lipinski on
his sixth home run of the season.
The Titans regained the lead 4-3 in the fifth when Jason
Chapieski hit a two-run single to
center.
In game one, Detroit jumped out to a 10-0 lead with a run in
the first, six in the second and
three in the third.
The Penguins got on the board in the fourth when Charles
Schultz scored on a sacrifice fly
off the bat of Cox. Jim
Lipinski then hit a three-run double
to left center in the fifth for the
final tally.
Bob Lotian went the distance for the Titans in game one as he
allowed four runs on four hits for
his third win of the season.
Kevin Libeg was tagged with the loss
as he allowed seven runs in 1 1/3
innings. Frank Santore pitched
4 2/3 innings of relief and allowed
three runs.
Adam Myers picked up his third win in game two in a complete
game victory while Chris Dennis got
the loss for the Penguins as he was
tagged with five runs in 6 innings
of work.
Lipinski and Schlabach had three hits apiece on the day to
lead the Penguin offensive attack.
The Penguins will look to earn a split Sunday when they take
on the Titans at 12:30 p.m. |
