Penguins Fall to Detroit, 8-4
Detroit -- The
Detroit Titans got strong pitching
from Keith Astrauckas and three RBIs
from Tim Poley to top Youngstown
State 8-4 at the James K. Campbell
Complex Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Titans earn their first three-game winning
streak of the season and improve to
13-32 overall and 7-9 in the Horizon
League. The Penguins fall to
14-26 overall and 4-9 in league
contests.
Youngstown State led twice in the contest, but Detroit never
let the Penguins get the upper hand
as it responded immediately both
times in the bottom half of the
inning.
The Penguins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when
Kendall Schlabach scored on an RBI
single from Charles Schultz.
Schlabach led off the inning with a
single up the middle and moved to
second on a sacrifice bunt from
Brandon Caipen. Schultz then
stepped up and ripped an Astrauckas
offering into centerfield for the
first run of the game.
Youngstown State starter Eric Shaffer was perfect through the
first three innings, but Detroit
broke through to tie the score in
the fourth when Jamey Embree scored
from second on a Poley single.
The Penguins tallied two runs in the fifth to reclaim the
lead at 3-1. Jim Phillips
doubled home Adam Cox and later
scored one batter later on an error.
Detroit, however, answered with three unearned runs in the
bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3
lead.
The Titans added a run in the sixth and tallied three more in
the eighth to go up 8-3.
Caipen singled home Schlabach in the top of the ninth for the
final tally.
Shaffer went 5 1/3 innings and surrendered four runs, three
of which were unearned, in a losing
effort for the Penguins.
Astrauckas picked up his third win
of the season as he allowed three
runs in six innings of work.
Poley pitched the final three
innings for his first save of the
season.
The Penguins will travel to take on Niagara on Tuesday at
3:30 p.m. |
