Dennis Outduels Gehring in 1-0 YSU Victory
Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State
junior Chris Dennis threw a
three-hit masterpiece and struck out
13 in a 1-0 victory over the
Illinois-Chicago Flames Saturday
evening at Eastwood Field.
Dennis threw 155 pitches and retired 11 of the last 12
batters he faced to outduel UIC's
Ryan Gehring, who fell victim to a
unearned run in the fifth inning.
With the win, the Penguins extend their winning streak to
three games and improve to 17-27
overall and 6-9 in the Horizon
League. UIC falls to 32-17
overall and 12-6 in the conference.
YSU broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth with two
hits and a Flame error. Adam
Cox hit a leadoff single and
advanced to third when centerfielder
Shane Crowder's attempt to double
him up at first on a sinking liner
sailed into the UIC dugout.
Brian Boone then stepped up and hit
a bloop single to left to plate Cox
and give the Penguins a 1-0 lead.
The Flames left seven runners on base in the contest,
including leaving two runners on in
the third, fourth and fifth innings.
In the third and fourth as they put runners on first and
second with one down in both
innings, but Dennis retired the next
two hitters in each inning to keep
UIC scoreless.
UIC loaded the bases in the fifth with two outs on three
walks, but Mike Hughes was tagged
out trying to steal home on an 0-2
pitch to end the inning.
Gehring was perfect through 3 1/3 innings until Brandon
Caipen doubled down the right field
line in the fourth, but the UIC
starter got Charles Schultz to pop
out to shallow left and Jim Lipinski
to ground out to end the inning.
Gehring was charged with the loss as he scattered five hits
and struck out six in eight innings
of work.
The Penguins will look to take the series Sunday when they
play host to the Flames in two
seven-inning affairs beginning at
noon. YSU's seven seniors will
be honored prior to game one as they
play their final Horizon League
regular season games at Eastwood
