Penguins Take Series In Doubleheader Split With UIC
Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State
pitchers Kevin Libeg and Andy Svitak
teamed up for a 2-1 victory in game
one of a doubleheader to lead the
Penguins to a split with the
Illinois-Chicago Flames on Sunday
afternoon at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins fell 7-0 in game two as UIC's Ryan Zink threw a
no hitter while allowing just three
baserunners and striking out 10 in
the seven-inning affair.
With the win in game one, the Penguins claimed the series 3-1
and improve to 18-28 overall and
7-10 in the Horizon League.
UIC moves to 33-18 and 13-7.
In game one, YSU rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two runs in
the bottom of the sixth after two
men were out to take a 2-1 lead.
Jim Lipinski got the bats going with
a single to right and Adam Cox
followed with an RBI double down the
right field line to tie the score.
Cox then scored when UIC shortstop
Jordan DeVoir couldn't handle a
grounder from Justin Banks.
UIC took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Mike Hughes double down
the left field line and J.P. Moran
raced around to score from second.
The Penguins had a chance to jump out on UIC starter Tom
Szalewski in the fourth as they had
the bases loaded with one down, but
the right-hander got Brian Boone to
ground into an inning-ending double
play to keep the score knotted at
zero.
Libeg scattered three hits and struck out three in six
innings of work to pick up his
fourth win while Svitak pitched a
perfect seventh to earn his third
save of the campaign.
Szalewski was tagged with the loss
as he allowed both runs and
scattered six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Lipinski finished with three of YSU's six hits in the opener
to lead the offensive attack.
In game two, the Flames went up 1-0 in the top of the first
as Mike Hughes reached on an infield
single, advanced to second on a
sacrifice bunt and came around to
score on a two-out single from
Justin Johnson.
UIC tacked on another run in the fifth when Bryan Russo hit a
leadoff double and scored two
batters later on another RBI single
from Johnson.
The Flames then tallied five runs on a three-run triple from
Brad Ryan and two wild pitches to
blow the game open in the seventh.
Zink retired the first five batters of the contest before
Kyle Penrod reached on a passed ball
on strike three in the second.
His only other two baserunners came
when he walked Penrod in the fifth
and hit Jim Phillips with an 0-1
pitch in the sixth.
Eric Shaffer was charged with the loss in game two as he
allowed two runs and seven hits in
the first 4 2/3 innings. Frank
Santore threw 1 1/3 scoreless
innings in relief.
The Penguins will play their final home game of the season on
Tuesday when they play host to the
Pittsburgh Panthers at 3 p.m.
YSU will then finish out its regular
season with a four-game series
against UW-Milwuakee beginning
Friday at 8 p.m. |
