Penguins Take Series In Doubleheader Split With UIC
Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State pitchers Kevin Libeg and Andy Svitak teamed up for a 2-1 victory in game one of a doubleheader to lead the Penguins to a split with the Illinois-Chicago Flames on Sunday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins fell 7-0 in game two as UIC's Ryan Zink threw a no hitter while allowing just three baserunners and striking out 10 in the seven-inning affair.
With the win in game one, the Penguins claimed the series 3-1 and improve to 18-28 overall and 7-10 in the Horizon League.  UIC moves to 33-18 and 13-7.
In game one, YSU rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth after two men were out to take a 2-1 lead.  Jim Lipinski got the bats going with a single to right and Adam Cox followed with an RBI double down the right field line to tie the score.  Cox then scored when UIC shortstop Jordan DeVoir couldn't handle a grounder from Justin Banks.
UIC took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Mike Hughes double down the left field line and J.P. Moran raced around to score from second.
The Penguins had a chance to jump out on UIC starter Tom Szalewski in the fourth as they had the bases loaded with one down, but the right-hander got Brian Boone to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep the score knotted at zero.
Libeg scattered three hits and struck out three in six innings of work to pick up his fourth win while Svitak pitched a perfect seventh to earn his third save of the campaign.  Szalewski was tagged with the loss as he allowed both runs and scattered six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Lipinski finished with three of YSU's six hits in the opener to lead the offensive attack.
In game two, the Flames went up 1-0 in the top of the first as Mike Hughes reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a two-out single from Justin Johnson.
UIC tacked on another run in the fifth when Bryan Russo hit a leadoff double and scored two batters later on another RBI single from Johnson.
The Flames then tallied five runs on a three-run triple from Brad Ryan and two wild pitches to blow the game open in the seventh.
Zink retired the first five batters of the contest before Kyle Penrod reached on a passed ball on strike three in the second.  His only other two baserunners came when he walked Penrod in the fifth and hit Jim Phillips with an 0-1 pitch in the sixth.
Eric Shaffer was charged with the loss in game two as he allowed two runs and seven hits in the first 4 2/3 innings.  Frank Santore threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
The Penguins will play their final home game of the season on Tuesday when they play host to the Pittsburgh Panthers at 3 p.m.  YSU will then finish out its regular season with a four-game series against UW-Milwuakee beginning Friday at 8 p.m.
