Wright State Rallies Twice in Rainy 7-6 Victory
Niles, Ohio -- The Wright State Raiders came from behind twice and outlasted a two-hour, 25-minute rain delay to defeat the Youngstown State Penguins 7-6 in a seven-inning Horizon League contest at Eastwood Field Saturday.
Game two of the scheduled doubleheader never got underway as the rain picked up again just after the conclusion of game one.
With Wright State in favor 4-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth at 2:30 p.m., the clouds opened up and the tarp was laid out for the first of four times on the afternoon.  Finally, at 4:55, play resumed and the Penguins came out hot at the plate.
Brandon Caipen led off the inning with a double just inside the bag at third and Charles Schultz followed with a single to center that snuck under Chris Jergens' glove, which allowed Caipen to score and Schultz to move to second.  After Jim Lipinski moved Schultz to third with a groundout, reliever Joe Smith walked Justin Banks on five pitches and took Adam Cox to a full count before throwing a wild pitch that allowed Schultz to score the typing run and Cox to reach on the free pass.  Kyle Penrod then ripped an RBI single to center to plate Banks and Jim Phillips was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded two batters later to score Cox and put the Penguins up 6-4.
YSU had a chance to blow the game open as it had the bases loaded with only one out, but WSU reliever Matt Crawford came in to force Kendall Schlabach into a fielder's choice and got Caipen to fly out to right to end the inning.
Wright State made the most of YSU's missed opportunity as it came back to score three runs in the top half of the seventh to take a 7-6 lead.  The Raiders banged out three straight hits off of YSU reliever Andy Svitak to start the inning as Pat Masters singled, Bryan Vickers doubled and Ross Vagedas hit a two-run single to tie the score at 6.  After a strikeout and a Penguin error, pinch hitter Brian Shoup singled into shallow right over the head of Justin Banks to bring home the winning run in Vagedas.
Svitak dropped to 1-3 on the season while Crawford picked up his first career victory and improved to 1-3 on the season.  Kevin Kuntz picked up his second save of the season in throwing a perfect seventh inning for the Raiders.
Justin Thomas scattered eight hits and allowed four runs in the first six innings for the Penguins.
The Penguins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second when Banks raced around from first to score on a Penrod double to right center and Brian Boone hit an RBI single to right.
Wright State answered immediately, however, in the top of the third when Vagedas singled home Coleman and Jergens brought home Vickers on a fielder's choice.
The Raiders took their first lead of the game in the fourth on an RBI single from Coleman and tacked on another in the fifth on a solo homer from Vickers.
Penrod finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Boone finished with two hits and one RBI to lead the Penguins.  Coleman, Vickers, Vagedes and Jeff Chalupa had two hits apiece for the Raiders.  Wright State outhit YSU 13-7.
Weather permitting, the teams will square off in a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
