Banks' Three Doubles, Five RBIs Lead YSU to Split With Kent State
Kent, Ohio -- Justin Banks went 4-for-5 with five RBIs in game two of a Saturday doubleheader to lift Youngstown State to a 10-6 victory over Kent State at Schoonover Stadium.
The Penguins, who dropped game one 2-0, banged out 14 hits and came back from a 5-2 deficit in the game to manage the split with the Golden Flashes. YSU moved to 25-16 on the season while Kent State goes to 28-16.
Matt Gnacinski threw three innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win of the season. The Golden Flashes scored their six runs in the first three innings off starter Andy Svitak, but Gnacinski, Ryan Sellman and Kevin Libeg allowed only one hit in a combined six scoreless innings of relief.
YSU got two runs on four hits in the top of the first as J.D. Hannan hit the game's first pitch down the right field line and scored two batters later when Dustin Thomas doubled. Banks then hit his first of three to plate Thomas and put the Penguins up 2-0.
Kent State answered with three runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the inning and plated two more in the second to go up 5-2.
Brandon Caipen doubled home Hannan and scored on a Brent Parks single in the third to pull the Penguins within one at 5-4, but Kent State answered once again with a run in the bottom of the third.
From that point it was all YSU as the Penguins scored two in the fourth to tie the score and two more in the seventh and eighth innings for the final tally.
Hannan finished with three hits and three runs scored while Parks had two hits and two RBIs.
In game one, Kent State scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth en route to a 2-0 victory.
Justin Thomas allowed both runs and gave up six hits in six innings of work in his first loss since March 12 at Missouri.
Jason Brunke went the distance in the seven-inning affair, holding the Penguins to just three hits in his picking up his first career shutout.
Will Vazquez went 3-for-3 with a runs scored in game one while Michael Obyc went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Justin Thomas held the Golden Flashes to just one hit in the first three innings, but KSU banged out three singles and benefited from two YSU errors in the fourth to go up 2-0. Kurt Eichorn was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced on a Gregg Hiller sacrifice bunt. Vazquez then singled off of Thomas' pitching hand and Eichorn came around to score when Charles Schultz's throw to first was wide. After another error on a pickoff play, Obyc singled to center to bring home Vazquez for the second run.
YSU put two runners on in the third and fourth innings, but Brunke induced a fielder's choice in both innings.
Banks' three doubles tied the school record and was the first time a Penguin accomplished the feat since Jim Lipinski hit three two-baggers against Akron on April 10, 2001.
The Penguins and Golden Flashes will play another doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
