Phillips, Boone Lead Penguins to 6-2 Victory Over Ohio
Niles, Ohio -- Jim Phillips went 2-for-4 with four
RBIs while Brian Boone threw five
shutout innings as Youngstown State
topped Ohio 6-2 in a non-conference
affair at Eastwood Field on
Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Penguins improved to 24-15 on the season
and increased their winning streak
to six games. Ohio fell to 20-17-1
on the year.
Phillips, who will be named YSU's Vindicator Male Athlete of
the Year on Thursday night, hit a
three-run homer in the first and
added an RBI ground-rule double in
the eighth. Boone allowed only three
hits in his longest outing of the
year to pick up his second win while
Ryan Sellman and Kevin Libeg each
threw one scoreless inning.
The Penguins put up a four-spot in the first inning as the
first three hitters reached and
Phillips hit his third homer of the
season. J.D. Hannan walked on four
pitches to start the game and
Brandon Caipen reached when his
attempted sacrifice bunt was thrown
into centerfield by OU starter Zeke
Isaacs. Dustin Thomas then singled
to left to bring in Caipen, and
Phillips sent Zeke's first offering
over both walls in left to make the
score 4-0.
Ohio got on the board in the sixth on a wild pitch and added
another run on a Bryan Buck RBI
double in the seventh to climb to
within 4-2, but YSU put up two
insurance runs in the eighth. Justin
Banks one-hopped the wall in left to
lead off the inning with a double
and Phillips followed with a
ground-rule double to right. Brian
Dill brought home Erich Diedrich
later in the inning for the final
tally.
Weiss kept the Penguins scoreless through six innings before
allowing the back-to-back doubles to
start the eighth.
Banks added a single for his 14th multi-hit game of the
season while Mike Turjanica also had
two singles.
The Penguins will travel to Kent State on Saturday for the
beginning of a four-game series with
the Golden Flashes. The teams will
play a seven-inning game and a
nine-inning game on Saturday in Kent
before playing another doubleheader
on Sunday at Eastwood Field. First
pitch for both days is set for 1
p.m.
