Fourteen-Hit Attack Leads Penguins Past Toledo, 13-5
Niles, Ohio -- Ten different Penguins
combined for 14 hits, including
posting five in a five-run sixth
that lifted Youngstown State to a
13-5 victory over Toledo in a
non-conference game Tuesday night at
Eastwood Field.
Justin Banks went 2-for-2 with two doubles, three RBIs and
three runs scored to lead the attack
while J.D. Hannan, Charles Schultz
and Josh Page also had two hits.
Brian Boone allowed only one hit in three innings to pick up
his first win of the season while
Josh Wells, Kevin Libeg and Matt
Gnacinski also had scoreless
outings.
With the win, the Penguins improved to 19-15 on the campaign
while the Rockets fell to 12-24.
YSU got the scoring started in the third when Hannan scored
from third on a fielder's choice,
and a three-run fourth put YSU up
4-0. Banks scored on a wild pitch
with one out and Schultz and Page
followed with RBI singles.
The Rockets cut the margin to three with a run in the fifth,
but Banks hit a two-run double and
Page walked with the bases loaded in
the bottom of the inning to give YSU
a 7-1 lead.
Toledo climbed back within four with two runs on four hits in
the sixth and had the bases loaded
with two outs, but Libeg came in to
retire Jason Watson and end the
inning.
The Penguins then blew the game open with five runs in the
sixth as Banks, Phillips, Mike
Turjanica and Hannan knocked in runs
to put YSU up 12-3. Brent Parks
doubled home Erich Diedrich in the
seventh to give YSU a 10-run
cushion, and Toledo scored twice in
the ninth for the final tally.
The Penguins will continue their Horizon League portion of
the schedule when they play host to
a four-game series with Butler
beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday at
Eastwood Field. The teams will then
square off in a Saturday
doubleheader at 1 p.m. while
Sunday's finale will also be at 1
