Penguins Suffer Heartbreak in 11th, Swept By Flames
Chicago --
Illinois-Chicago's Ted Rosinski hit
a game-tying two-run home run in the
bottom of the ninth, and the Flames
got an unearned run in the 11th to
complete a doubleheader sweep of
Youngstown State on Saturday
afternoon at Les Miller Field.
The Flames claimed game one 14-3 before their
10-9 victory in game two to improve
to 31-18-1 overall and 12-6 in the
Horizon League. YSU fell to 25-20
overall and 7-3 in league contests.
The teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow beginning
at 2:05 p.m. EST.
In game two, ten different Penguins combined to post a
season-high 21 hits, but YSU
stranded 14 runners and managed only
one extra-base hit. Erich Diedrich
went 4-for-6 in game two and
7-for-10 overall in the doubleheader
while J.D. Hannan had four hits in
game two. Jim Phillips added a solo
home run and two singles in four at
bats.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, YSU took its first
lead of the afternoon at 5-3 with a
three-run sixth inning. Phillips led
off the inning with his fourth homer
of the season to tie the score, and
Mike Turjanica's RBI groundout
plated Dustin Thomas with the
go-ahead run. Hannan brought in
Charles Schultz on an infield single
one batter later to put the Penguins
up two.
UIC got a run in the bottom of the inning to get within one,
and the teams matched each other in
the next two innings with a run
apiece in the seventh and two in the
eighth to make the score 8-7.
Diedrich put the Penguins up two in the top of the ninth with
a two-out RBI single to center, but
Rosinski's two-run blast to right
off Ryan Sellman sent the game to
extra frames.
Bryan Russo led off the 11th with a bunt single and advanced
to third when Justin Banks' throw
was wild from third. Mark Hallberg
then singled to left to bring in
Russo for the game-winner.
Sellman was charged with the loss as he allowed three runs in
two innings while Ryan Hopkins
picked up the win.
UIC scored 10 runs in the first two innings in game one and
never looked back en route to a 14-3
victory.
The Flames scored six runs in the first - five off of starter
Justin Thomas before recording an
out - and added four more in the
second to take a 10-0 lead.
The Penguins got on the board in the fifth when Hannan scored
on Diedrich's fielder's choice.
After UIC scored twice in both the
fifth and sixth innings to go up
14-1, Brian Boone and Brent Parks
hit solo homers in the seventh for
the final tally.
Ryan Zink threw all seven innings for the Flames and struck
out six hitters to win his sixth
game of the season.
