Flames Complete Sweep of Penguins
Chicago -- Youngstown State left nine runners on base in a 3-2 loss in game one and fell behind early in game two as Illinois-Chicago swept a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Les Miller Field.
The Flames improved to 33-18-1 overall and 14-6 in the Horizon League and secured a bye in the Horizon League Tournament. The Penguins dropped to 25-22 overall and 7-5 in the league, and they must win three games next weekend against UW-Milwaukee to receive one of the top two seeds and a bye in the tournament.
UIC got off to fast starts in both games, scoring two runs in the first inning in game one and four in the first in game two.
In game one, Youngstown State cut UIC's lead to one in the top of the second when Brent Parks hit a two-out triple and Brandon Caipen singled. YSU tied the score in the fifth when Jim Phillips singled home Charles Schultz, but UIC answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Jason Gremely reached on an infield single with one out, and Shane Crowder followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and second. After a double steal, Bryan Russo hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Gremely with the eventual game-winner.
Ryan Zink, who threw a complete game in game one on Saturday, came in and retired the Penguins in order in the sixth, and after Phillips doubled with one out in the seventh, got a groundout and a strikeout to pick up the save.
In game two, UIC jumped out to a 7-0 lead and hit five home runs en route to a 12-4 win.
YSU cut the lead to 7-2 with two runs in the sixth on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Schultz and Caipen, but the Flames scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 12-2. Erich Diedrich hit a two-run home run in the seventh for the final tally.
Tom Szalewski went the distance for the Flames while Lucas Engle was tagged with the loss for YSU.
The Penguins will play Kent State at 1 p.m. at Cene Park on Tuesday and at Pittsburgh on Wednesday before their weekend series with UW-Milwuakee.
